Langlois, Oregon
Langlois is an Unincorporated area, unincorporated community and census-designated place in Curry County, Oregon, Curry County, Oregon, United States, on the Oregon Coast established in 1881. It had a population of 177 in 2010. Langlois was once famous for its blue cheese, until the cheese factory burned down in the 1950s. It was never rebuilt. Langlois was named for William Langlois, an early Oregon pioneer. As phonetically spelled in the 1860 Federal Census, Port Oxford Precint, page 110, the name was pronounced "Langless,” however the modern pronunciation used by the local residents today is “Lang-loyce.” (It rhymes with Joyce.) The population consists primarily of retirees, with a healthy mix of ranchers and farmers. The logging and fishing industries are also a dominant presence in the community. New River (Oregon)
The New River is a stream, about long, on the southern coast of the U.S. state of Oregon. It begins slightly north of Floras Lake, at the confluence of the lake outlet and Floras Creek, and runs north behind a foredune until entering the Pacific Ocean between Bandon and Port Orford. The river's name stems from its creation in 1890, when sand blocked the outlet from Floras Lake during a heavy storm, and the resulting flood created a new channel behind the foredune. The water from Floras Creek also flows down the new channel. The river loses only in elevation between source and mouth. Pre-history Evidence suggests that as early as 8,000 years ago, long before the New River existed, ancestors of the Siletz and Coquille peoples lived here in large villages near an estuary. Gold Beach, Oregon
Gold Beach (Tolowa: yan-shu’-chit, yan-shuu-chit’-dvn) is a city in and the county seat of Curry County, Oregon, United States, on the Oregon Coast. The population was 2,241 at the 2020 census. History The community was originally named Ellensburg in the 1850s, but later took the name Gold Beach after a beach near the mouth of the Rogue River where hundreds of placer mines extracted gold. An Ellensburg post office was established in 1853, changed to Ellensburg in 1877, and changed to Gold Beach in 1890. Mailboats based in Gold Beach have been delivering mail upstream to Agness since 1895, one of only two rural mailboat routes remaining in the U.S. Although Gold Beach had been a community since the middle of the 19th century, and the county seat since 1859, its current incorporation charter only dates to 1945.
