Lane House (Edenton, North Carolina)
Lane House is an historic house in Edenton, North Carolina that is the oldest house in North Carolina identified by dendrochronology. The -story house is located within the Edenton National Register Historic District. The earliest part was built 1718–19 and possibly moved to the site from nearby. The house is currently owned by Steve and Linda Lane. During renovations of the house, which they were using as a rental property, the contractor discovered older hand-hewn beams within the structure. Researchers from Williamsburg and elsewhere were contacted to conduct dendrochronological research on the building. Edenton, North Carolina
Edenton is a town in, and the county seat of, Chowan County, North Carolina, United States, on Albemarle Sound. The population was 4,397 at the 2020 census. Edenton is located in North Carolina's Inner Banks region. In recent years Edenton has become a popular retirement location and a destination for heritage tourism. Edenton served as the second official capital of North Carolina, during the colonial era as the Province of North Carolina, though other than housing the governor's official residence, it did not otherwise house any other governmental functions. It served as capital from 1722 to 1743, when it was moved to Brunswick. The town was the site of the Edenton Tea Party, a protest organized by several Edenton women in 1774 in solidarity with the organizers of the Boston Tea Party. Dendrochronology (or tree-ring dating) is the scientific method of dating tree rings (also called growth rings) to the exact year they were formed. As well as dating them, this can give data for dendroclimatology, the study of climate and atmospheric conditions during different periods in history from wood.
