Landing Zone East (also known as FSB East, LZ Mary Lou, Hill 488 or Howard's Hill) is a former U.S. Army base west of Tam Kỳ, Quảng Nam Province, Vietnam. History The base was established in 1967 by the 196th Infantry Brigade and was located approximately 17 km west of Tam Kỳ and 7 km northeast of Tiên Phước Camp. 196th Infantry Brigade (United States)
The 196th Infantry Brigade ("Chargers"), also known as the Charger Brigade was first formed on 24 June 1921 as part of the United States Army Reserve's 98th Division with the responsibility of training soldiers. World War II During World War II, the 98th initially defended Kauai, Hawaii and Maui, Hawaii, and finally responsible for defending Oahu, Hawaii later in the war. The Division began intensive training in May 1945 to prepare for the invasion of Japan, but the war ended before they could depart Hawaii. Tiên Phước Camp
Tiên Phước Camp (also known as Tiên Phước Special Forces Camp) is a former U.S. Army and Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN) base southwest of Tam Kỳ in central Vietnam. History The 5th Special Forces Group Detachment A-102 first established a base here in March 1966 to monitor communist infiltration into the Song Chang Valley.The base was located on QL-585 approximately 20 km southwest of Tam Kỳ and 43 km northwest of Chu Lai. On the night of 22 February 1969 the People's Army of Vietnam (PAVN) attacked the camp which was defended by the 5th Special Forces Detachment A-102 and CIDG forces. 82nd Field Artillery Regiment is a field artillery regiment of the United States Army. The regiment has been involved with American conflicts dating back to then US involvement in the Mexican Civil War and more recently with the War on Terrorism. Currently, there are two active and three inactivate battalions in the regiment. Traditionally, the regiment has been aligned with the 1st Cavalry Division at Fort Hood, Texas and Fort Bliss, Texas.
