Landbouwbelang (squat)
Landbouwbelang (LBB) is a squatted industrial building in Maastricht, Netherlands. It offers working space for artists and social entrepreneurs and functions as a venue for cultural events. It has been squatted since April 2002. Landbouwbelang is located in the Boschstraatkwartier neighbourhood, on the bank of river Meuse ( nl, Maas) and next to the production site of a paper manufacturer Sappi. History The building was constructed in 1939 for processing and storing cereals by Vereniging Landbouwbelang Roermond. The cereal processing activities ceased in the 1970s and the building was acquired by the neighbouring paper mill until it was purchased by the City of Maastricht. The space served as a venue for community events before being squatted on 6 April 2002. Landbouwbelang reported 10 000 annual visitors in 2015. De Blauwe Aanslag
De Blauwe Aanslag was a squat and self-managed social centre in the Dutch city of The Hague. The oldest part of the building was built in 1886. The large building formerly housed tax offices and was occupied in 1980. When the local council took over the ownership of the building, it was agreed to renovate it in three stages, with the squatters living there. However the plans changed and since 1995 the council decided to widen the roads next to the building; for this reason the squat needed to be demolished. After many efforts to block the demolition with lawsuits, the squatters were evicted by military police on 3 October, 2003. Occupation With the Dutch squatters movement regularly in the news for events such as the Vondelstraat eviction resistance and the Amsterdam coronation riots, De Blauwe Aanslag was occupied in 1980. Ubica
The Ubica buildings are two adjacent buildings standing at 24 and 26 Ganzenmarkt, in central Utrecht, the Netherlands. Number 24 is a rijksmonument. The first recorded mention of the buildings is from 1319. After centuries of residential use, the buildings were bought by the Ubica mattress company in 1913 and used until a devastating fire in 1989. The buildings were then squatted for 21 years, before being redeveloped into a hotel and café-restaurant in 2014. History The first recorded mention of number 24 dates from 1319. This building was originally constructed in the 'weergangshuis' style, which in Utrecht is only otherwise found along the Oudegracht. The building now has a 19th century façade which pairs it with number 26, but internally the walls and beams follow a structure believed to be from the 13th century. Moira (Utrecht)
Moira is a music and arts venue in the city center of Utrecht, Netherlands. History The building at Wolvenstraat 10 was built in 1906. From 1939 until 1959, it was the Zegers dance school. The insurance company Moira turned it into a canteen, then after it became derelict it was Squatting in the Netherlands, squatted in 1983. Legalized in 1990, it focuses on early career artists and innovative performances. Moira Foundation offers a stage to early career artists and musicians who have made little or no name in the established circuit. The exhibition space Moira organizes about ten events every year. Vrankrijk
Vrankrijk is a legalised Squatting in the Netherlands, squat and self-managed social centre on the Spuistraat in central Amsterdam. There is an events space on the ground floor and above it a separate housing group. History The building was constructed in 1875. It was called Vrankrijk (Frankrijk means 'France' in Dutch) from the very beginning. After first being a woodworking shop, it became a printers. During World War II it was used by Marten Toonder and others to print fake documents for the resistance. Occupation Vrankrijk was Squatting in the Netherlands, squatted in November 1982 in order to stop its demolition. It had stood empty for 7 years and was in a very bad state. OT301
OT301 is a self-managed social centre in a legalized squat in the Dutch city of Amsterdam, located on Overtoom 301. History The former Dutch film academy was squatted in 1999 by a group of artists. After being a breeding ground for a number of years, the building was bought by the user association Eerste Hulp Bij Kunst (EHBK) from the council in 2006. It is used as a multi-media alternative cultural centre, comparable to projects in other Dutch cities such as Extrapool in Nijmegen and WORM in Rotterdam. OCCII
The OCCII (Onafhankelijk Cultureel Centrum In It) is a venue for alternative and independent music at Amstelveenseweg 134, in Amsterdam, Netherlands. The organization is mostly run by volunteers and has its roots in the squatting movement. The original building was squatted in 1984 and "legalized" in 1989. Next to the concert hall, and as part of the Binnenpret complex, there are also a café (called the Kasbah), a restaurant (called MKZ), a library (Bollox), theatre for children (Kinderpret), a bike workshop (Farafina), a sauna (Fenomeen) rehearsal studios, and a big courtyard. The sauna was closed in 2011 after a management dispute. Grote Broek
De Grote Broek (English: ''The Big Trousers'') is a legalised squat and self-managed social centre in central Nijmegen in the Netherlands. It was occupied in 1984 and legalised from 2002 onwards. It spans two sides of a city block and has entrances on both Van Broeckhuysenstraat and Tweede Walstraat. The project consists of two separate housing co-operatives living above a cafe on one side and Extrapool and a music venue on the other. ACU (Utrecht)
ACU is a political-cultural venue in the city centre of Utrecht, in the Netherlands. The name ACU is derived from "Auto Centrale Utrecht" (Car Centre Utrecht) and is one of the many signs of its origin as an old squat. Nowadays it is still run by volunteers as an infoshop and social centre in order to keep it an independent and non-profit harbour within Utrecht's nightlife. History The car centre ACU existed from 1935 to 1967. In 1976, the premises were squatted and adapted for habitation. Over time, multiple small businesses settled there as well, for example a bike-shop. The residents started a cinema in the former showroom in 1979. After two years the cinema was replaced by a coffeehouse to be able to provide a public space for the squatting community.
