Land-en-Zeezicht
Land-en-Zeezicht is a neighbourhood of Somerset West, in the Western Cape, South Africa. It was originally part of the historic Vergelegen wine estate. In 1914, Hendrik Hendriksz came into possession of the area known as Land-en-Zeezicht, building his mansion on Verster Avenue. Two of his daughters, Alida and later Johanna, married Jan Hendrik Hofmeyr (Onze Jan) in that house. His family and descendants lived until 1947 and again from 1951 to 1971 on the farm. Somerset West
Somerset West ( af, Somerset-Wes) is a town in the Western Cape, South Africa. Organisationally and administratively it is included in the City of Cape Town metropolitan municipality as a suburb of the Helderberg region (formerly called Hottentots Holland). The vehicle registration code for Somerset West is ''CFM'' and the post code is 7130 for street addresses, and 7129 for post office boxes. History A cattle post was established here by Dutch soldiers in 1672. Western Cape
The Western Cape is a province of South Africa, situated on the south-western coast of the country. Vergelegen
Vergelegen (Dutch: "remotely situated") is a historic wine estate in Somerset West, in the Western Cape province of South Africa. Foundation The estate was settled in 1700 by an early Governor of the Cape, Willem Adriaan van der Stel. Van der Stel used the resources of his employer, the Dutch East India Company, to improve the estate, and in 1706 a number of free burghers at the Cape drew up a formal memorandum complaining about van der Stel's illegal activities. This memorandum contains some of the earliest images and descriptions of the estate. As a consequence of the free burghers' complaints, van der Stel and other officials were sacked, and three-quarters of the original Vergelegen estate was sold off, drastically reducing the size of the property. Jan Hendrik Hofmeyr (Onze Jan)
Jan Hendrik Hofmeyr (4 July 1845 – 11 October 1909) was a South African politician. He was affectionately known as ''Onze Jan'', "our Jan" in Dutch. Life He was born in Cape Town, educated at the South African College, and at an early age turned his attention to politics, first as a journalist. He was editor of '' de Zuid-Afrikaan'' until its incorporation with ''Ons Land'', and of the ''Zuid Afrikaansche Tijdschrift''. By birth, education and sympathies a typical Dutch Afrikaner, he set himself to organize the political power of his fellow-countrymen. This he did very effectively, and when in 1879 he entered the Cape parliament as member for Stellenbosch, he became the real leader of the Dutch party. Zamoyski
The House of Zamoyski (plural: Zamoyscy) is the name of an important Polish noble (szlachta) family, which used the Jelita coat of arms. It is the Polish term for "de Zamość" (Polish "z Zamościa"), the name they originally held as lords of Zamość. The family was influential in Polish politics for several centuries, and its members held various official titles, including those of Count and Countess.
