Lamson L-106 Alcor
The Lamson L-106 Alcor is an American, high-wing, experimental, pressurized research glider that was designed and built by Bob Lamson. USPS 499-920 Design and development The Alcor was conceived during the 1960s as a high altitude research aircraft by Lamson. He had served in the US Army Air Corps and also worked for the Boeing Aircraft Company as a test pilot. While at Boeing during the 1940s, he worked on high-altitude oxygen systems, which led him to investigate aircraft pressurization. He attended the University of Washington. The Alcor is named for the star in Ursa Major and was optimized for flight in weak mountain wave soaring conditions. Alcor (star)
Alcor () is a binary star system in the constellation of Ursa Major. It is the fainter companion of Mizar, the two stars forming a naked eye double in the handle of the Big Dipper (or Plough) asterism in Ursa Major. The two both lie about 83 light-years away from the Sun, as measured by the ''Hipparcos'' astrometry satellite. Nomenclature Alcor has the Flamsteed designation ''80 Ursae Majoris''. ''Alcor'' was originally Arabic , meaning either the 'forgotten' or 'neglected' one; notable as a faintly perceptible companion of Mizar. In 2016, the International Astronomical Union organized a Working Group on Star Names (WGSN) to catalog and standardize proper names for stars. The WGSN's first bulletin of July 2016 included a table of the first two batches of names approved by the WGSN; which included ''Alcor'' for 80 UMa. Chinook winds, or simply Chinooks, are two types of prevailing warm, generally westerly winds in western North America: Coastal Chinooks and interior Chinooks. The coastal Chinooks are persistent seasonal, wet, southwesterly winds blowing in from the ocean. The interior Chinooks are occasional warm, dry föhn winds blowing down the eastern sides of interior mountain ranges.
