''Lamiel'' is a 1967 French historical drama film. It was directed by Jean Aurel and stars Anna Karina, Michel Bouquet, and Jean-Claude Brialy. The film is based on Stendhal's unfinished last novel, '' Lamiel''. A costume drama set in the 19th century, it centers on the young orphan Lamiel (Karina) as she rises from poverty into high society under the guidance of a doctor (Bouquet), who lives vicariously through her. She eventually marries a bankrupt '' comte'' (Brialy), but falls for a thief who breaks into her bedroom one night. Jacques Laurent or Jacques Laurent-Cély (6 January 1919 – 28 December 2000) was a French writer and journalist. He was born in Paris, the son of a barrister. During World War II, he fought with the Algerian Tirailleurs. Laurent was elected to the Académie française in 1986. Laurent belonged to the literary group of the '' Hussards'', and is known as a prolific historical novelist, essay writer, and screenwriter under the pen name of Cecil Saint-Laurent. The 1955 film ''Lola Montès'', directed by Max Ophüls, was based on his historic novel based on the life of Lola Montez. Marie-Henri Beyle (; 23 January 1783 – 23 March 1842), better known by his pen name Stendhal (, ; ), was a 19th-century French writer. Christian Barbier
Christian Barbier (28 June 1924 – 3 November 2009) was a French film and television actor. Barbier was born at Saint-Ouen, Seine (currently Seine-Saint-Denis), France. During his career (1964 to 1997), he specialized in drama rather than comedy. In film, he held several leading roles but is especially distinguished in auxiliary roles depicting more limited characters. He is especially remembered for his first-class performance in ''Army of Shadows'' by Jean-Pierre Melville in 1969. Bernadette Lafont (28 October 1938 – 25 July 2013) was a French actress who appeared in more than 120 feature films. She has been considered "the face of French New Wave". Jean-Claude Brialy (30 March 1933 – 30 May 2007) was a French actor and film director. Early life Brialy was born in Aumale (now Sour El-Ghozlane), French Algeria, where his father was stationed with the French Army. Brialy moved to mainland France with his family in 1942. He was an alumnus of the Prytanée National Militaire. When he was 21 years old, he went to Paris to work as an actor.
