Lamia Al-Hariri
Lamia al Hariri ( ar, لمياء الحريري) is Syria's former chargée d'affaires in the Republic of Cyprus who defected to Qatar in July 2012. Early life Hariri was born in Hama but originally from the Daraa Governorate. She is the daughter of the retired major general Mohammad Al Hariri, a former deputy interior minister. She is also the niece of Syrian vice-President Farouk al Shaara. Career and defection Hariri was appointed to Nicosia as Syrian chargée d'affaires in November 2010. Her defection was reported by Al Jazeera on 24 July 2012. Two members of the opposition Syrian National Council (SNC) confirmed her defection on 25 July 2012. Al Arabiya reported that she joined the opposition. She reportedly went to Qatar and she is still there. Nawaf al-Fares ( ar, نواف فارس الصياح ) is the former Syrian ambassador to Iraq who defected from the ruling government led by Bashar al-Assad on 11 July 2012 during the Syrian uprising. Career Fares was a veteran of Assad's rule and held senior positions as a leading member of Syria's diplomatic corps under the late president Hafez Assad. He served as high-ranking official of the Syrian Regional Branch of the Arab Socialist Ba'ath Party in Deir al Zour province. Additionally, Fares held senior security posts in Syria. He is also a former provincial governor. He served as the governor of three significant governorates, Latakia Governorate (until 2000), Idlib Governorate (appointed in 2000) and Quneitra Governorate.
