Lamellerie's Expedition
Lamellerie's expedition was a French naval operation launched in February 1806. Four French Navy frigates and a brig, all survivors of the Battle of Trafalgar in October 1805, attempted to break past the British blockade of Cadiz on 23 February 1806, taking advantage of the withdrawal of the principal blockade squadron several months earlier at the start of the Atlantic campaign of 1806. Although the squadron was intercepted by elements of the British blockade force, Captain Louis-Charles-Auguste Delamarre de Lamellerie escaped with the four frigates by abandoning the slower brig, which was captured. During the next six months, Lamellerie's squadron cruised the Atlantic, visiting Senegal, Cayenne and the West Indies but failing to cause any significant disruption to British trade. John Thomas Duckworth
Sir John Thomas Duckworth, 1st Baronet, GCB (9 February 174831 August 1817) was an officer of the Royal Navy, serving during the Seven Years' War, the American War of Independence, the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic wars, as the Governor of Newfoundland during the War of 1812, and a member of the British House of Commons during his semi-retirement. Duckworth, a vicar's son, achieved much in a naval career that began at the age of 11. Serving with most of the great names of the Royal Navy during the later 18th and early 19th centuries, he fought almost all of Britain's enemies on the seas at one time or another, including a Dardanelles operation that would be remembered a century later during the First World War. French Brig Furet (1801)
''Furet'', launched in 1801, was an ''Abeille''-class brig of the French Navy. captured her on 27 February 1806, off Cadiz. Career ''Lieutenant de vaisseau'' Demay commissioned ''Furet'' on 25 February 1802. On 23 June 1802, he sailed on a secret mission from Toulon to Mahon, and return. ''Furet'', with Demay still in command, sailed with Admiral Pierre-Charles Villeneuve, Villeneuve's fleet from Toulon on 29 March 1805 to Martinique. She returned to Europe with the fleet and then participated in both the battles of Battle of Cape Finisterre (1805), Finisterre and Battle of Trafalgar, Trafalgar. John Surman Carden
Admiral John Surman Carden (15 August 1771 – 22 April 1858) was an officer of the British Royal Navy in the early nineteenth century. Although the majority of his service was against the French during the Napoleonic Wars, he is best remembered for the action of 25 October 1812, an engagement against a larger American frigate during the War of 1812 in which his ship was captured. Carden was criticised for the loss of his ship, specifically his handling of the vessel during the action. Following his defeat in October 1812 he never served again in an active capacity, but he remained in the Navy and continued to gradually rise though the ranks in retirement, eventually becoming a full admiral before his death in 1858. George Mundy
Admiral Sir George Mundy, KCB (3 March 1777 – 9 February 1861) was an officer of the British Royal Navy during the early nineteenth century, serving principally in the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. Born in Shipley Hall, Derbyshire, the son of politician Edward Miller Mundy, George Mundy joined the Navy at a young age and served in several of the principal actions of the French Revolutionary Wars. He subsequently held a succession of frigate commands during the Napoleonic Wars and was active in the blockade of the French coast and in assisting Spanish irregular forces during the Peninsular War. HMS Moselle (1804)
HMS ''Moselle'' was a ''Cruizer''-class brig-sloop of the Royal Navy, launched in 1804. She served during the Napoleonic Wars in the Mediterranean, the Caribbean, and the North American station. She was sold in 1815. Career Commander Robert Simpson commissioned her in December 1804 for the Downs. Commander John Surnam Carden replaced Simpson on 21 December 1804. Sloop-of-war
In the 18th century and most of the 19th, a sloop-of-war in the Royal Navy was a warship with a single gun deck that carried up to eighteen guns. The rating system covered all vessels with 20 guns and above; thus, the term ''sloop-of-war'' encompassed all the unrated combat vessels, including the very small gun-brigs and cutters. In technical terms, even the more specialised bomb vessels and fireships were classed as sloops-of-war, and in practice these were employed in the sloop role when not carrying out their specialised functions. HMS ''Hydra'' launched in 1797 was a fifth-rate frigate of the Royal Navy. From 1813 to 1817 she served as a troopship. She was sold in 1820. French Frigate Hortense (1803)
''Hortense'' was a 40-gun and lead vessel of her class of the French Navy. In January 1805, under the command of Captain Delamarre de Lamellerie, she and were sent to observe British movements off Toulon. On 4 February they attacked a convoy, destroying seven ships. Cuthbert Collingwood
Vice Admiral Cuthbert Collingwood, 1st Baron Collingwood (26 September 1748 – 7 March 1810) was an admiral of the Royal Navy, notable as a partner with Lord Nelson in several of the British victories of the Napoleonic Wars, and frequently as Nelson's successor in commands. The Battle of San Domingo was a naval battle of the Napoleonic Wars fought on 6 February 1806 between squadrons of French and British ships of the line off the southern coast of the French-occupied Spanish colonial Captaincy General of Santo Domingo (''San Domingo'' in contemporary British English) in the Caribbean. All five of the French ships of the line commanded by Vice-Admiral Corentin-Urbain Leissègues were captured or destroyed.
