Lamar County School District
The Lamar County School District (LCSD) is a public school district based in Purvis, Mississippi (USA). In addition to Purvis, the district also serves the town of Sumrall; the communities of Arnold Line, Baxterville, Lumberton, Oak Grove, and West Hattiesburg; and portions of Hattiesburg, as well as most rural areas in Lamar County. The district extends into Pearl River County, where it serves the rest of Lumberton. History The Lumberton Public School District was disestablished, as per Governor of Mississippi Phil Bryant signing Senate Bill 2500, which required consolidation, in 2016. Initially the Lumberton district, as per the senate bill, was to be dissolved effective July 1, 2019, with portions in Lamar County going to the Lamar County School District and Pearl River County portions to the Poplarville Separate School District. Phil Bryant
Dewey Phillip Bryant (born December 9, 1954) is an American politician who served as the 64th governor of Mississippi from 2012 to 2020. A member of the Republican Party, he was the 31st lieutenant governor of Mississippi from 2008 to 2012 and 40th state auditor of Mississippi from 1996 to 2008. A Republican, Bryant was elected governor in 2011, defeating the Democratic nominee Mayor Johnny DuPree of Hattiesburg. He was reelected in 2015, defeating truck driver Robert Gray. Poplarville High School
Poplarville is a city in Pearl River County, Mississippi, United States. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 2,894. It is the county seat of Pearl River County. It hosts an annual Blueberry Jubilee, which includes rides, craft vendors and rodeos. History Poplarville was named for Poplar Jim Smith, the original owner of the town site. In 1959, Mack Charles Parker, an African-American accused of rape, was abducted from the Pearl River County jail in Poplarville by a mob and shot to death. Despite confessions, no charges were filed against anyone. The mayor of Poplarville told a ''New York Times'' reporter, "You couldn't convict the guilty parties if you had a sound film of the lynching." It was the fourth lynching in Poplarville since the Civil War.
