Lakewood Ranch High School
Lakewood Ranch High School in Manatee County, Florida, United States, was opened in 1998 in Bradenton, Florida. It is named after the master planned community it borders, Lakewood Ranch. In the 2011–2012 school year, Lakewood Ranch High School was awarded the two highest honors given by the Florida High School Athletic Association. The Mustangs placed first in the Academic Team Champions and the Floyd E. Lay Sunshine Cup, All Sports Award. Lakewood Ranch was the only public school in the State of Florida to win both awards. The school was in the news in 2015 when a teacher, Hollis Ann Morantes, was arrested on drug and child neglect charges after methamphetamine was found at her home in reach of her child. Morantes was placed on administrative leave and later resigned. Bradenton ( ) is a city in and the county seat of Manatee County, Florida, Manatee County, Florida, United States. As of the 2020 United States Census, 2020 census, the city's population is 55,698. History Late 18th and early 19th centuries A settlement established by Maroons or escaped slaves named Angola, Florida, Angola existed in Bradenton's present area starting in the late 1700s and ending in 1821. It is believed to been spread out between the Manatee River (then known as Oyster River) all the way to Sarasota Bay. The community is estimated to have had 600–750 residents in it. Angola was a rather large maroon settlement as the Manatee River at that time was too shallow for US Navy vessels to navigate. The settlement was abandoned after the Muscogee, Creeks who were aligned with Andrew Jackson attacked Angola. Mike Ohlman
Michael Livingston Ohlman (born December 14, 1990) is an American former professional baseball catcher who played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Toronto Blue Jays during the 2017 season. Early years Ohlman attended Lakewood Ranch High School in his hometown of Bradenton, Florida. Professional career Baltimore Orioles Ohlman was selected by the Baltimore Orioles in the 11th round of the 2009 Major League Baseball draft, and signed for a $995,000 bonus. He appeared in four games for the Gulf Coast League Orioles that year, and recorded a .182 batting average and one run batted in (RBI). Ohlman started the 2010 minor league season with the Class-A Delmarva Shorebirds, but was sent down to the Rookie Advanced Bluefield Orioles in June after struggling to compete in A-level baseball.
