Lakeside – Lester Park is a neighborhood in Duluth, Minnesota, United States. London Road (MN 61), East Superior Street, and Glenwood Street serve as main routes in the community. ''Lester Park'' also refers to a large park within the neighborhood. The Lester River and Amity Creek both flow through the neighborhood. Lester Park Golf Course and Lester Park Elementary School are also located in the neighborhood. Until 2016 Lakeside was a "dry neighborhood". No alcohol was sold in store or available for purchase and restaurants. There were no laws against residents consuming alcohol in their own home or at private events. The ban was ended by popular vote in 2016. Great Lakes Aquarium
The Great Lakes Aquarium opened in 2000 and is located on the Duluth waterfront. A 501(c)(3) private nonprofit, Great Lakes Aquarium features animals and habitats found within the Great Lakes basin and other freshwater ecosystems such as the Amazon River. The Aquarium houses 205 different species of fish, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and mammals. It is one of few aquariums in the United States that focuses predominantly on freshwater exhibits. Hawk Ridge, Duluth
Hawk Ridge is a nature reserve and bird observatory renowned for its autumnal raptor migrations. The Audubon Society describes Hawk Ridge as "one of the premier sites in North America". P. B. Hofslund, one of the first ornithologists to conduct research there, pronounced it "one of the great hawk flyways of the world". Twenty-thousand birdwatchers visit Hawk Ridge each year to view the migration. It is an important site for ornithological research. History The area was originally frequented by hunters. Lester River Fish Hatchery
The Lester River Fish Hatchery was a federal fish hatchery in Duluth, Minnesota, United States. It was built at the mouth of the Lester River in the 1880s to propagate fish for the Lake Superior commercial fishery. The hatchery closed in 1946 and the facility was sold to the University of Minnesota Duluth, which used it as its Limnological Research Station. The surviving four buildings are noted for their Stick and Shingle Style architecture, forming a distinctive landmark to local residents as well as tourists heading to Superior's North Shore. In 1978 the hatchery complex was listed on the National Register of Historic Places under the name US Fisheries Station, Duluth, for its state-level significance in the themes of architecture and education.
