Lake Wateree State Park is a state park located in Ridgeway, South Carolina Ridgeway is a town in Fairfield County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 319 at the 2010 census. The state park is located on Desportes Island on Lake Wateree, 17 miles from Winnsboro SC and 14 miles from Ridgeway SC. The site was acquired by the state in 1982 and offers 100 camping sites, picnic shelters, an on-site tackle shop with boat refueling, and a mile-long nature tail. The park was formerly known as Lake Wateree State Recreation Area. Ridgeway is a town in Fairfield County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 319 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Columbia, South Carolina Metropolitan Statistical Area. History Blink Bonnie, Camp Welfare, Century House, Hunter House, Mount Hope, Ridgeway Historic District, Ruff's Chapel, St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, Valencia, Vaughn's Stage Coach Stop, and the Monroe Wilson House are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Geography Ridgeway is located in southeastern Fairfield County at (34.305777, -80.961390). U.S. Route 21 passes through the towns, leading north to Great Falls and south to Columbia. South Carolina Highway 34 leads west to Interstate 77 and east to Lugoff. Winnsboro, the county seat, is to the northwest via SC 34. Lake Wateree
Lake Wateree is a reservoir in Kershaw, Fairfield, and Lancaster counties, South Carolina, in the United States. Developed in 1919 by the damming of the Wateree River, it is one of South Carolina's oldest man-made lakes. It has of shoreline and includes Lake Wateree State Park, a bird refuge, and Shaw Air Force Base Recreation Center. It was named after the river, and both were named for the Wateree Native Americans, an historic tribe who lived in the area before European settlement. They became extinct as a tribe after European warfare and encroachment, and their descendants merged with the Catawba people. Location The lake is surrounded by three South Carolina counties: Kershaw, Fairfield and Lancaster. It is about northeast of the capital Columbia. I-77 passes west of the lake, and it is accessible via SC 97.
