Lake Shore Drive (song)
"Lake Shore Drive" is a song written by Skip Haynes of the Chicago-based rock group Aliotta Haynes Jeremiah, initially recorded on December 31, 1971, and released on their 1973 Lake Shore Drive album on Big Foot Records. The song is a homage to the famed lakefront highway in Chicago. Despite the fact that "LSD" had long been an abbreviation for the Drive, many people thought the song referred to the hallucinogenic drug lysergic acid diethylamide. Numerous fans of the song and residents of Chicago believe the song paints an accurate musical picture of living and driving in downtown Chicago. Lyrics Skip Haynes himself recounts "We started recording the song on December 31, 1971 and finished it on New Years Day 1972". Despite the fact that lyricist Haynes maintains that the song is not about LSD, the line "Just slippin' on by on L.S.D. / Friday night, trouble bound" has been construed as a double entendre of both driving on Lake Shore Drive and tripping on the drug. Aliotta Haynes Jeremiah
Aliotta Haynes Jeremiah was an American rock group from the 1970s. The preceding incarnation was named Aliotta Haynes, a trio composed of bassist Mitch Aliotta, drummer Ted Aliotta, and guitarist Skip Haynes. Ted departed after their debut album, ''Aliotta Haynes Music'' (1970), and was replaced by keyboardist John Jeremiah. As Aliotta Haynes Jeremiah, their 1971 eponymous album was their last for the Ampex label. The band scored a popular regional hit in the Chicago, Illinois area in 1972 with the title track of their follow-up 1973 album, ''Lake Shore Drive'', a tribute to the lakefront highway in Chicago. The initials "LSD" are occasionally used in Chicago vernacular to refer to the highway (although it is sometimes referred to as the Outer Drive to distinguish it from Inner Lake Shore Drive, which extends from Ohio St. to E. Aorta were an American psychedelic rock band from Chicago who recorded two albums in the late 1960s and early 1970s. History The band developed from a soul, pop and rock'n'roll group who had originally formed in Rockford, Illinois in 1962 as Kal David and the Exceptions. Its members were Kal David (b. David Raskin - vocals and guitar), Peter Cetera (bass, vocals), Denny Ebert (drums, vocals), and Marty Grebb (saxophone, keyboards, guitar, vocals). David left in 1965, to join The Rovin' Kind, later to become Illinois Speed Press, and was replaced by James Vincent (b. James Vincent Dondelinger, 8 February 1943, in Chicago; later known as Jim Donlinger). The band was then known as The Exceptions. Chicago is an American rock music, rock band formed in Chicago, Illinois, in 1967. The group began calling themselves the Chicago Transit Authority in 1968, then shortened the name in 1969. Self-described as a "rock and roll band with Horn (instrument), horns", Chicago's songs often combine elements of classical music, jazz, R&B, and pop music. Growing out of several bands from the Chicago area in the late 1960s, the line-up consisted of Peter Cetera on bass, Terry Kath on guitar, Robert Lamm on keyboards, Lee Loughnane on trumpet, James Pankow on trombone, Walter Parazaider on Woodwind instrument, woodwinds, and Danny Seraphine on drums. Mason Proffit was an American country rock band from Indianapolis, Indiana, that released five albums between 1969 and 1973. They are known for their song "Two Hangmen", which garnered a significant amount of Album Oriented Rock airplay. History Brothers Terry Talbot and John Michael Talbot played together in several local bands around Indianapolis, Indiana and later in Chicago. Illinois Speed Press was an American rock band formed – originally, in 1965, as The Rovin' Kind – in Chicago, later relocating to California. The band was formed by Paul Cotton – later of Poco – and Kal David. According to Allmusic, their sound "combined elements of R&B and country music in a powerful double-lead-guitar attack." Cotton and David reunited in 2009 to perform together under the name. Cotton died in July 2021. David died in August 2022. Big Twist and the Mellow Fellows was an American blues and rhythm and blues group. The frontman was the singer and harmonica player Larry "Big Twist" Nolan ''(né'' Lawrence Millard Nolan; 23 September 1937, Terre Haute, Indiana – 14 March 1990, Broadview, Illinois). He began singing in church at the age of six. During the 1950s he sang and played drums in a bar band, the Mellow Fellows, performing everything from R & B, blues and country music.
