Lake Poinsett is a census-designated place (CDP) in Hamlin and Brookings counties in South Dakota, United States. The population was 501 at the 2020 census. Geography The Lake Poinsett CDP comprises the lake of the same name and its shoreside communities in Hamlin and Brookings counties. U.S. Route 81 passes through the CDP along the western shore of the lake and leads north to Watertown and south to Arlington. Arlington is a city in Brookings and Kingsbury counties in the State of South Dakota. The population was 915 at the 2020 census. History The city was platted by the Western Town Lot Company in 1880, and originally named Nordland, with the platted streets given Norwegian names. The city was renamed a few years later, and in 1885 given the name of Arlington, after the colonial center in Virginia. (It was briefly named Denver in the interlude, but postal authorities did not approve of the name.) Watertown is a city in and the county seat of Codington County, South Dakota, United States. Watertown is home to the Redlin Art Center which houses many of the original art works produced by Terry Redlin, one of America's most popular wildlife artists. Watertown is located between Pelican Lake and Lake Kampeska, from which Redlin derived inspiration for his artwork. Lake Poinsett (South Dakota)
Lake Poinsett is one of the largest lakes in the state of South Dakota. The lake is located northeast of the town of Arlington, South Dakota. It has the name of the U. S. Secretary of War, Joel Poinsett. In 1838, the area was first visited by the expedition of Joseph Nicollet and John Fremont, who camped on the lake's north shore. Poinsett was instrumental in promoting the expedition. Shoreside housing developments along the lake comprise the census-designated place of Lake Poinsett.
