Lake Mountain Lookout Complex
The Lake Mountain Lookout Complex is a 49-foot tall lookout tower erected in 1926 approximately 20 miles east of Lakeside, Arizona. It overlooks a portion of the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest. The lookout was staffed by a forest ranger who was stationed at the nearby Los Burros Ranger Station, from which they would ride out to the lookout each day. The tower was constructed atop Lake Mountain, at the 8250 foot elevation, by the Aermotor Windmill Company. McNary, Arizona
McNary ( apw, Chaabiitú) is a census-designated place (CDP) in Apache and Navajo counties in the U.S. state of Arizona, on the Fort Apache Indian Reservation. The population was 528 at the 2010 census. It is a 30-minute drive from Show Low and a 10-minute drive from Pinetop-Lakeside. Geography McNary is located at (34.076687, -109.854674). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of , of which is land and , or 1.30%, is water. At an elevation of , it is the second highest community in Arizona after Alpine. Pinetop–Lakeside is a town in Navajo County, Arizona, United States. According to 2020 census, the population of the town is 4,557. It was founded in 1984 when the neighboring towns of Pinetop and Lakeside merged. Pinetop–Lakeside is a popular summer resort and second-home area for Arizona desert residents. In 2002, a large forest fire, the Rodeo–Chediski Fire, threatened the town and forced an evacuation. The town is near extensive forests, and in normal times is a popular recreational area. Los Burros Ranger Station
The Los Burros Ranger Station is a forest ranger station situated in Apache County, Arizona. The station was staffed by rangers who traveled to the nearby Lake Mountain Lookout Complex, Lake Mountain Lookout. History The area was most likely named by sheepherders after stray donkeys which used to frequent the area due to the local water supply. Forest Road 224, upon which the station sits, is considered to be the route which was followed by Francisco Vázquez de Coronado on his searches for Seven Cities of Gold, Cibola. As the Forestry Service began to develop its lookouts in Arizona forests, the men and animals needed to man those lookouts could sometimes be accommodated at local ranches/farms.
