Lake Gairdner National Park
Lake Gairdner National Park is a protected area associated with Lake Gairdner in South Australia (Australia), 436 km northwest of Adelaide. It is located just south of the Trans-Australian Railway, Stuart Highway, and the Woomera Prohibited area. The national park consists of the following salt lakes (from east to west) - Lake Gairdner, Lake Harris and Lake Everard. Ordinarily, the country is totally arid, and devoid of free water, surface or underground. In the summer, it can be extremely hot. In the springtime, however, this country has great attraction for birdwatchers and botanists. There is generally very limited public access to this park, which is surrounded by pastoral leases. The easiest public access is from the main road running from Yardea to Kingoonya, at The Brothers Well, a concrete catchment at the side of the road at the southern end of Moonaree Station (though the road signs would have you believe that you were on Yardea Station). Woomera, South Australia
Woomera, unofficially Woomera village, refers to the domestic area of RAAF Base Woomera. Woomera village has always been a Defence-owned and operated facility. The village is located on the traditional lands of the Kokatha people in the Far North region of South Australia, but is on Commonwealth-owned land and within the area designated as the 'Woomera Prohibited Area' (WPA). The village is approximately north of Adelaide. In common usage, "Woomera" refers to the wider RAAF Woomera Range Complex (WRC), a large Australian Defence Force aerospace and systems testing range (the 'Woomera Test Range' (WTR)) covering an area of approximately and is operated by the Royal Australian Air Force. Yardea
Yardea Station is a pastoral lease in the Australian state of South Australia that operates as a sheep station, now within the Gawler Ranges National Park. Paney Station became part of Yardea Station in 1904. It is situated approximately north east of Minnipa and west of Iron Knob in the Gawler Ranges. History The land occupied by the station is on the traditional lands of the Kokatha, Wirangu and Barngarla peoples. There was once an Aboriginal camp, including a freshwater spring later used as the station's water source, and they maintained and used rock holes in the granite rock formations as a water source. Yardea was established at some time prior to 1865, and was the first property taken up in the Gawler Ranges, with Hiltaba and Paney following soon afterwards. Far North (South Australia)
The Far North is a large region of South Australia close to the Northern Territory border. Colloquial usage of the term in South Australia refers to that part of South Australia north of a line roughly from Ceduna through Port Augusta to Broken Hill. The Kokatha, also known as the Kokatha Mula, are an Aboriginal Australian people of the state of South Australia. They speak the Kokatha language, close to or a dialect of the Western Desert language. Country Traditional Kokatha lands extend over some according to the estimation of Norman Tindale, stretching over some of the harshest, waterless land on the Australian continent. They include Tarcoola, Kingoonyah, Pimba and the McDouall Peak as well as modern townships of Roxby Downs and Woomera. Moonaree Station
Moonaree Station is a pastoral lease that operates as a sheep station in South Australia. It is approximately northeast of Minnipa and southwest of Woomera. The property is adjacent to Lake Gairdner in the Gawler Range. The station was established prior to 1885. At this time the property was owned by Messrs Davies and Co. The area around Moonaree and Kumberta Downs was subjected to a prolonged heat wave in 1894 with a temperature of recorded in the sun at Moonaree at the hottest part of the day with temperatures of recorded two hours after sunset. Davies, Todd and Co. placed Moonaree up for auction in 1895 when it occupied an area of and was stocked with over 16,000 sheep and 50 horses.
