A survey township, sometimes called a Congressional township or just township, as used by the United States Public Land Survey System, is a nominally-square area of land that is nominally six U.S. survey miles (about 9.66 km) on a side. Each 36-square-mile (about 93.2 km2) township is divided into 36 section (land), sections of one square mile (640 acres, roughly 2.6 km2) each. The sections can be further subdivided for sale. The townships are referenced by a numbering system that locates the township in relation to a principal meridian (north-south) and a Baseline (surveying), base line (east-west). Williamson County is a county in Southern Illinois. At the 2020 census, it had a population of 67,153. The largest city and county seat is Marion. Williamson County is included in the Carbondale-Marion, IL Metropolitan Statistical Area. This area of Southern Illinois is known locally as "Little Egypt". Johnston City, Illinois
Johnston City is a city in Williamson County, Illinois, United States. The population was 3,348 at the 2020 census. This was a center of coal mining in the early 20th century, having a peak of population in the 1920s. The mining jobs attracted many immigrants from Europe. History Johnston City was founded in 1894 as a stop along the Chicago, Paducah and Memphis Railroad (later part of the Chicago and Eastern Illinois), and named for the contracting firm that constructed the railroad. The eastern part of the city was originally known as Jeffersonville. It was surveyed in 1853. During the American Civil War it was a prosperous village. The post office was established in 1852 under the name Lake Creek. It was moved to Johnston City in 1903 but it was not until several years after that that Jeffersonville was fully amalgamated into Johnston City. Whiteash, Illinois
Whiteash is a Census designated place in Williamson County, Illinois, United States. The population was 268 at the 2000 census, and dropped to 248 in the 2010 census. This village dissolved in 2014. History Whiteash began as a coal mining community around the Chicago and Marion Coal Company's mine organized by Charles A. Gent of nearby Marion, Illinois. In 1903, Gent bought the site of the village from Samuel K. Casey, publisher of the ''Egyptian Press'' newspaper also of Marion. He in turn had inherited it from his grandfather George W. Binkley who had homesteaded the land and entered it with the government in 1837. Gent platted the village on July 3, 1903, in the northwest corner of Section 31, Township 8 South, Range 3 East of the Third Principal Meridian, also known as Lake Creek Precinct. Pittsburg, Illinois
Pittsburg is a village in Williamson County, Illinois. The population was 572 at the 2010 census. History Pittsburg was established in 1906 as part of a mining operation developed by coal entrepreneur John Colp (for whom nearby Colp is named). Colp named the village for Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, as he hoped it would achieve that city's prosperity. Many of the streets in the village were likewise named for locations in Pennsylvania, including Scranton Avenue, Lehigh Valley Avenue, Hocking Valley Avenue, and Pennsylvania Avenue. Halfway, Illinois was an unincorporated community in northeastern Williamson County, Illinois located about halfway between the county seat of Marion and Corinth. A post office operated from 1895 to 1911 in a country store. The ZIP Code was 62974. It is not to be confused with the later Halfway in Williamson County on Illinois Route 37 between Marion and Johnston City. Geography The store was located almost on the township line in Section 25, Township 8 South, Range 3 East of the Third Principal Meridian in what's known today as Lake Creek Precinct. Today the area is the intersection of Edwards Road (the old road to Corinth) and Dwina Road that runs along the township line. History Joseph H. Williams opened the post office 5 February 1895.
