The Lake County Sheriff's Department is the county law enforcement agency for Lake County, Indiana. History The first sheriff was elected in 1837, when Lake County was organized. Notorious gangster John Dillinger was held in the Lake County jail from January of 1934 to March, when he escaped. The sheriff at the time was Lillian Holley, who held the office after the previous sheriff, her husband Roy, was shot and killed: although the media mocked her for Dillinger's escape, the fault lay with the prison warden and his officers. In 1975, the Sheriff was found in contempt for failing to improve conditions at the jail. In 1985, Sheriff Rudy Bartolomei was indicted on corruption charges. Bartolomei later turned state witness and was placed in witness protection after providing testimony against several Lake County political figures. Lake County is a county located in the U.S. state of Indiana. In 2020, its population was 498,700, making it Indiana's second-most populous county. The county seat is Crown Point. The county is part of Northwest Indiana and the Chicago metropolitan area, and contains a mix of urban, suburban and rural areas. The detectives in this division typically investigate crimes involving sexual assault or victims of non-sexual crimes who require specialist handling such as the very young, the very elderly, or the disabled. Griffith-Merrillville Airport
Griffith-Merrillville Airport is a public-use airport two miles east of Griffith, in Lake County, Indiana, United States. It is privately owned by Griffith Aviation, Inc. Facilities The airport covers at an elevation of 634 feet (193 m). Its runway, 8/26, is 4,900 by 75 feet (1,494 x 23 m) asphalt. The runway has VOR/ DME, GPS Instrument Approaches and Pilot Controlled Lighting. Airport services include a fixed-base operator (FBO) and flight school from Griffith Aviation, full service maintenance from Great Northern and custom engine overhauls from G & N Aircraft. Both 100LL gas and Jet A fuel are available. In the year ending August 23, 2006 the airport had 33,699 aircraft operations, average 92 per day: 99% general aviation and 1% air taxi. SWAT
In the United States, a SWAT team (special weapons and tactics, originally special weapons assault team) is a police tactical unit that uses specialized or military equipment and tactics. Although they were first created in the 1960s to handle riot control or violent confrontations with criminals, the number and usage of SWAT teams increased in the 1980s and 1990s during the War on Drugs and later in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks. In the United States by 2005, SWAT teams were deployed 50,000 times every year, almost 80% of the time to serve search warrants, most often for narcotics. By 2015 that number had increased to nearly 80,000 times a year. Hammond ( ) is a city in Lake County, Indiana. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area, and the only city in Indiana to border Chicago. East Chicago is a city in Lake County, Indiana, United States. The population was 29,698 at the 2010 census. The city is home of the Indiana Harbor and Ship Canal, an artificial freshwater harbor characterized by industrial and manufacturing activity. Situated along Lake Michigan, East Chicago is about 18 miles from downtown Chicago, Illinois and is just west of Gary, Indiana.
