David Laing (antiquary)
David Laing LLD (20 April 1793 – 18 October 1878) was a Scottish antiquary. Life Laing was born on 20 April 1793, the son of William Laing (1761–1831), a bookseller in Edinburgh, and his wife Helen Kirk. They lived and worked from the head of Chessels Court on the Canongate. He was educated at Canongate Grammar School and then attended the University of Edinburgh. At the age of 14 he was apprenticed to his father. They formed W & D Laing Booksellers at 49 South Bridge, living at Ramsay Lodge at 66 Lauriston in 1830. Shortly after the death of his father in 1837, Laing was elected to be Librarian of the Signet Library replacing Macvey Napier, a post he retained until his death. James Laing (doctor)
James Laing (c.1749–1831) was a Scottish doctor and slave plantation owner in Dominica. Life He was born in the parish of Crimond, c. 1748, the son of Alexander Laing and Jane Henderson.''Scottish Notes and Queries'' 1929, p. 239 According to later testimony, he was resident as a young man in Dominica, by the later 1760s. There were other Scots of the same name in the Caribbean at this period, including Dr James Laing in Tobago, from Elgin, Moray. Laing acquired lands in Scotland, at Haddo-Rattray, Buchan, in 1789. Ivan Laing
Ivan Laing (18 August 1885 – 30 November 1917) was a Scottish field hockey player who competed in the 1908 Summer Olympics. Born in Hawick, and a member of the Hawick Hockey Club, in 1908 he won the bronze medal as member of the Scotland team. Laing also played rugby for Hawick RFC, and swam for Hawick Amateur Swimming Club. Hugh Laing
Hugh Laing (6 June 191110 May 1988) was one of the most significant dramatic ballet dancers of the 20th-century. He danced with Marie Rambert's Ballet Club and New York City Ballet. He was the partner of choreographer Antony Tudor. Biography Hugh Laing was born in Barbados in the then British West Indies. He moved to London in 1931 to study art, but soon became interested in ballet. After taking ballet classes with Marie Rambert, Margaret Craske and Olga Preobrajenska, he joined Miss Rambert's experimental Ballet Club in 1933, and it was there that he met Antony Tudor. He remained Tudor's artistic collaborator and companion until the choreographer's death in 1987. For the Ballet Club, Tudor created roles for Laing in ''The Planets'', ''The Descent of Hebe'', ''Jardin aux Lilas'' and ''Dark Elegies''. Hector Laing, Baron Laing Of Dunphail
Hector Laing, Baron Laing of Dunphail, (12 May 1923 – 21 June 2010) was a British businessman. The son of Hector Laing Sr and Margaret Norrie Grant was educated at the Loretto School in Musselburgh and Jesus College, Cambridge. Laing served as a tank commander in the Scots Guards between 1942 and 1947, and reached the rank of a Captain. He was mentioned in dispatches and awarded the US Bronze Star during campaign in France in 1944–45.
