The Lagos Open is a defunct WCT, Grand Prix and Challenger affiliated tennis tournament played from 1976 to 1991. It was held in Lagos in Nigeria and played on outdoor clay courts from 1976 to 1980, then on outdoor hard courts from 1981 to 1991. Harry Fritz (tennis)
Harry Fritz (born 19 February 1951) is a Canadian-American former professional tennis player. Tennis career Fritz played his first tournament in 1971 at the Real Madrid International in Madrid, Spain where he lost to Lew Hoad in the second round. A left-handed player, Fritz was born in Yuma, Arizona and played collegiate tennis for East Texas State. He was a member of the university's 1972 NAIA championship team, in a year he also won the singles and doubles individual titles. He was a semi finalist at the Ankara International in Ankara Turkey in 1974 losing to Denmark's Lars Elvstrøm, and at the Alabama State Open Championships in 1977 where he lost to Mike Cahill. Bruce Kleege
Robert Bruce Kleege (born November 1, 1954), known as Bruce Kleege, is a former professional tennis player from the United States. Biography Early years and college Kleege grew up in La Jolla, California, but was born in Frankfurt, West Germany. He is of Latvian descent through his father Robert, who worked at the time for the United Nations. After attending Clairemont High School, Kleege went to Brigham Young University from 1972 to 1977. He had a noted varsity tennis career, which culminated in winning the No. 1 singles conference championship in 1977, a year he went undefeated and ranked sixth nationally. For his efforts he was awarded All-American honors, in both singles and doubles. Joel Bailey (tennis)
Joel Bailey (born April 25, 1951) is a former professional tennis player from the United States. Biography Bailey was born in Florida but based in Memphis, Tennessee. An All-American varsity tennis player at Samford University, Bailey began competing internationally in the late 1970s. He won a Grand Prix doubles title in Lagos, Nigeria with Bruce Kleege in 1979. In singles, he had his first big match win at Sarasota in 1980 when he saved triple match points to upset Steve Krulevitz, from a set and 2–5 down. He had only entered the tournament as a wild card, which was awarded as he was the son of Mack Bailey, who owned the company that sponsored the tournament. Jürgen Fassbender (german: Faßbender, born 28 May 1948) is a retired German tennis player. On the ATP Tour, Fassbender won three singles and 15 doubles titles. Colin Dowdeswell (born 12 May 1955) is a former professional tennis player who represented, at different times, Rhodesia, Switzerland and the United Kingdom, and who achieved rank as UK No. 1. George Hardie (tennis)
George Hardie (born February 19, 1953) is a former professional tennis player from the United States. Career Hardie went to college at Southern Methodist University and was runner-up to Billy Martin in the 1975 NCAA Division One final. He had dropped just one game in winning the first two sets, but lost the match in five. He also lost to Billy Martin at the Arkansas International Tennis Tournament that year. It would remain the only final that he reached on the Grand Prix tennis circuit. He made semi-finals at Baltimore in 1978 (where he defeated Adriano Panatta) and Costa Rica in 1979. Karel Nováček (born 30 March 1965) is a retired Czech former top ten tennis player born in Prostějov, Czechoslovakia (Czech Republic). In his career, Nováček won 13 singles titles and six doubles titles. His highest singles ranking was World No. 8, which he achieved on 18 November 1991.
