Laetifautor Rubropunctatus
''Laetifautor rubropunctatus'' is a species of sea snail, a marine gastropod mollusk in the family Calliostomatidae.Bouchet, P. (2012). ''Laetifautor rubropunctatus'' (A. Adams, 1851). Accessed through: World Register of Marine Species at http://www.marinespecies.org/aphia.php?p=taxdetails&id=467301 on 2012-12-07 Description The small, buffish shell has an orbiculate-conic shape. It is ornamented with transverse spinulose cinguli (4 on the body whorl). The interstices are clathrate, beautifully dotted with red. This species is readily recognized by its peculiar painting and remarkable sculpture. A.Adams describes the color as "lutescens." G.W. Tryon rather considers it pale fleshy pink, with dark red dots in the interstices between the oblique costae and the transverse or spiral ridges. The latter are said to be four in number on the body whorl. But on careful examination Tryon found six, of which four are, however, more prominent than the rest. The upper volutions are encirc ...

The small, imperforate shell has a conical shape. Its color is reddish-white. It shows rows of acute spirals of small granules (about 6 on the penultimate whorl). The spire is moderately acute. The seven whorls are slowly increasing in size. The first one is sinistral and globose. The rest are subangulate in the middle. Above and below the suture they are flat. The base of the last whorl forms an angle. The aperture is irregularly subquadrate and sulcate within. The columella has a prominent callus. The granules are not so acutely conical, and the base more closely granulated. Some examples exhibit scattered pale-brown dots, whilst others a ...

They are characterized by a stepped spire and a pointy aperture. They may possess or lack an umbilicus. The collumella is sometimes thicker, partially covering the aperture. The spiral whorls can differ between narrow and robust. They inhabit a wide range of ocean habitats, from the intertidal zone to mid- bathyal depths. Taxonomy This taxon was long considered to be a subfamily of the Trochidae. 2005 taxonomy This family consists of two following subfamilies (according to the taxonomy of the Gastropoda by Bouchet & Rocroi, 2005): * subfamily Calliostomatinae Thiele 1924 (1847) ** tribe Calliostomatini Thiele 1924 (1847) - synonym: Ziziphininae G ...
