Lady Rose's Daughter
''Lady Rose's Daughter'' is a 1920 American silent drama film starring Elsie Ferguson and David Powell with directing being from Hugh Ford. It was produced by Famous Players–Lasky and released through Paramount Pictures. The film was based on a stage play performed in 1903 on Broadway. Both the film and the play were based on the famous 1903 novel by Mrs. Humphry Ward. The actress Ida Waterman had appeared in the original 1903 Broadway play. As with most of Elsie Ferguson's silent films, it is now considered to be a lost film. Plot As described in a film magazine, granddaughter and daughter of two matrimonial insurgents, Julie Le Breton (Ferguson) has a bar sinister heritage to perpetually battle. Ida Waterman
Ida Waterman (born Ida Shaw; March 10, 1852 – May 22, 1941) was a stage and screen actress. Waterman was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She appeared some thirty or more Broadway productions between the late 1880s and early 1920s. She played Elise Claremont in the 1889 farce-comedy '' Our Flat'' and the following year Mrs. Kirke in '' Men and Women'' opposite Maude Adams. In 1899 she was Mrs. Crawley in ''Becky Sharp'' (later made into 1934 film ''Becky Sharp)'' and in 1922 closed out her Broadway career playing Mrs. French in ''Lawful Larceny''. Waterman was popular in numerous silent films in the teens and twenties as a supporting elderly actress much like Kate Lester. For films in which any portion of the footage remains (including trailers), see List of incomplete or partially lost films. Reasons for loss Films may go missing for a number of reasons. One major contributing factor is the common use of nitrate film until the early 1950s. This type of film is highly flammable, and there have been several devastating fires, such as the Universal Pictures fire in 1924, the 1937 Fox vault fire and the 1965 MGM vault fire. Black-and-white film prints judged to be otherwise worthless were sometimes incinerated to salvage the meager scrap value of the silver image particles in their emulsions. Films have disappeared when production companies went bankrupt. Occasionally, a studio would remake a film and destroy the earlier version.
