Lady Caroline Paget
Lady Alexandra Mary Cecilia Caroline Paget (15 June 1913 – 22 May 1973) was an English socialite and actress. Early life and family Lady Caroline was born Lady Alexandra Mary Cecilia Caroline Paget on 15 June 1913. She was the eldest child of Charles Paget, 6th Marquess of Anglesey, and his wife, the former Lady Victoria Manners. Lady Caroline's mother was the daughter of Henry Manners, 8th Duke of Rutland. Career During the 1930s, she was a notable British socialite, and a minor actress. She was beloved of the artist Rex Whistler, who painted numerous portraits of her, including a startling nude, which is on display at Plas Newydd, (the ancestral home of the Marquess of Anglesey). Lady Caroline Paget was the unrequited love of Elizabeth Parrish Starr. Sir Michael Duff, 3rd Baronet
Sir Charles Michael Robert Vivian Duff, 3rd Baronet (3 May 1907 – 3 March 1980) was a British socialite who was Lord Lieutenant first of Caernarvonshire, and then of Gwynedd. Family Duff was the only son of Sir Robert George Vivian Duff, 2nd Baronet, of Vaynol (d.1914), and his wife, Lady Juliet Lowther (1881–1965), only child of the 4th Earl of Lonsdale by his wife, Constance Robinson, Marchioness of Ripon. His maternal grandmother was a sister of the 13th and 14th Earls of Pembroke and Montgomery, and a daughter of the Rt. Hon. Sidney Herbert, 1st Baron Herbert of Lea, the half-Russian younger son of the 10th Earl of Pembroke, and a good friend to Florence Nightingale. Charles Paget, 6th Marquess Of Anglesey
Lieutenant-Colonel Charles Henry Alexander Paget, 6th Marquess of Anglesey, (14 April 1885 – 21 February 1947) was a British peer, farmer and soldier. Biography Paget was born in 1885 to Lord Alexander Paget, third son of Henry Paget, 2nd Marquess of Anglesey, and to Hester Alice Stapleton-Cotton, daughter of Wellington Stapleton-Cotton, 2nd Viscount Combermere. He was educated at Eton and the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. In 1905, he succeeded as Marquess of Anglesey on the demise of his childless cousin, the 5th Marquess. He was also Earl of Uxbridge, Baron Paget, and the 9th Baronet Paget, of Plas Newydd. Career Anglesey briefly served in the Royal Horse Guards before his election as Mayor of Burton upon Trent from 1911 to 1912. Victoria Marjorie Harriet Paget, Marchioness of Anglesey (''née'' Manners; 20 December 1883 – 3 November 1946) was a British writer on art, an illustrator, and a member of the peerage. Biography Lady Victoria was the eldest daughter of Henry Manners, 8th Duke of Rutland, a British peer, and the former Marion Margaret Violet Lindsay, an artist. Her brother John was an art expert who became the 9th Duke of Rutland, and her sister Diana was an actor, author, and socialite. In 1920, she coauthored (with art historian G.C. Williamson) a study of the neoclassical painter Johan Zoffany that is considered the first in-depth study of the artist. ''Johan Zoffany, R. Henry Manners, 8th Duke Of Rutland
Henry John Brinsley Manners, 8th Duke of Rutland, (16 April 1852 – 8 May 1925), known as Henry Manners until 1888 and styled Marquess of Granby between 1888 and 1906, was a British peer and Conservative politician. Background Rutland was the only child of John Manners, 7th Duke of Rutland, by his first wife Catherine Louisa Georgina, daughter of Colonel George Marley. His mother died just before his second birthday. He had four half-siblings from his father's second marriage, including Lord Edward Manners and Lord Cecil Manners. He gained the courtesy title of Marquess of Granby in 1888 when his father succeeded his elder brother in the dukedom. Rex Whistler
Reginald John "Rex" Whistler (24 June 190518 July 1944) was a British artist, who painted murals and society portraits, and designed theatrical costumes. He was killed in action in Normandy in World War II. Whistler was the brother of poet and artist Laurence Whistler. Biography Reginald John Whistler was born in Britain on 24 June 1905, in Eltham, Kent (now part of the Royal Borough of Greenwich), the son of architect and estate agent Henry Whistler and Helen Frances Mary, the daughter of Rev. Charles Slegg Ward, vicar of Wootton St Lawrence, and through her mother a descendant of the goldsmith and silversmith Paul Storr. Plas Newydd is a country house set in gardens, parkland and surrounding woodland on the north bank of the Menai Strait, in Llanddaniel Fab, near Llanfairpwllgwyngyll, Anglesey, Wales. The current building has its origins in 1470, and evolved over the centuries to become one of Anglesey's principal residences. Elizabeth Parrish Starr (April 29, 1889 – 1943) was an American heiress who volunteered in Europe during both World War I and World War II, dying from starvation at the end of the second. Edith Olivier
Edith Maud Olivier MBE (31 December 1872 – 10 May 1948) was an English writer, also noted for acting as hostess to a circle of well-known writers, artists, and composers in her native Wiltshire. Family and childhood Olivier was born in Wilton, of Huguenot stock, her father being Canon of Wilton, and her mother the daughter of a bishop. She was one of ten children. National Screen And Sound Archive Of Wales
The National Screen and Sound Archive of Wales was established in 2001 in order to preserve and promote the audio visual heritage of Wales. The archive is funded by the National Library of Wales and the Welsh Government and located at the National Library of Wales in Aberystwyth. The archive holds a collection of over 5 million feet of film that represents Welsh culture and life in Wales from the late 19th Century through to the 21st Century.
