Ladies Of Leisure
''Ladies of Leisure'' is a 1930 American pre-Code romantic drama film directed by Frank Capra and starring Barbara Stanwyck and Ralph Graves. The screenplay by Jo Swerling is based on the 1924 play ''Ladies of the Evening'' by Milton Herbert Gropper, which ran for 159 performances on Broadway. The film is about an artist from a wealthy family who hires a "party girl" as his model. As they get to know each other, the girl begins to regret her past, and the two fall in love, but they must face his family's strong opposition to their union. ''Ladies of Leisure'' received generally positive reviews, and Stanwyck's performance was praised by critics. The success of the film made Stanwyck a star. Frank Russell Capra (born Francesco Rosario Capra; May 18, 1897 – September 3, 1991) was an Italian-born American film director, producer and writer who became the creative force behind some of the major award-winning films of the 1930s and 1940s. Marie Prevost
Marie Prevost (born Marie Bickford Dunn; November 8, 1896 – January 21, 1937) was a Canadian-born film actress. During her 20-year career, she made 121 silent and sound films. Prevost began her career during the silent film era. She was discovered by Mack Sennett who signed her to contract and made her one of his "Bathing Beauties" in the late 1910s. Prevost appeared in dozens of Sennett's short comedy films before moving on to feature-length films for Universal. In 1922, she signed with Warner Bros. where her career flourished as a leading lady. ''Ladies of Leisure'' is a 1926 American silent melodrama film produced and distributed by Columbia Pictures. The film was directed by Tom Buckingham and stars Elaine Hammerstein. This film is not related in story to the Ladies of Leisure, 1930 Frank Capra film of the same name. However, prints of both films are held by the Library of Congress. Plot As described in a film magazine review, Mamie Taylor, a hired companion and friend to Marian Forrest, is in love with latter's brother Jack. Mamie's affections are fixed on Van Norden, a wealthy bachelor. Eddie Lannigan, a crooked blackmailer, threatens to expose Mamie's past. Frank Fay (American Actor)
Frank Fay (born Francis Anthony Donner; November 17, 1891 – September 25, 1961) was an American vaudeville comedian (the first stand-up) and film and stage actor. He is considered an important pioneer in stand-up comedy. For a time he was a well known and influential star, but he later fell into obscurity, in part because of his abrasive personality and fascist political views. He played the role of Elwood P. Dowd in the 1944 Broadway play ''Harvey'' by the American playwright Mary Coyle Chase. He is best known as actress Barbara Stanwyck's first husband. Their troubled marriage is thought by some to be the basis of the 1937 film '' A Star Is Born'', in which the previously unknown wife shoots to stardom while her husband's career goes into sharp decline.
