Lac Ste. Anne was a provincial electoral district in Alberta, Canada, mandated to return a single member to the Legislative Assembly of Alberta from 1909 to 1971. History Lac Ste. Anne electoral district was created out of Stony Plain electoral district in 1909. Lac Ste. Anne electoral district was abolished in 1970 and distributed into Stony Plain, Barrhead and Whitecourt electoral districts. Albert Vital Bourcier (August 25, 1901 – February 8, 1982) was a provincial politician from Alberta, Canada. List Of Alberta Provincial Electoral Districts
Alberta provincial electoral districts are currently single member ridings that each elect one member to the Legislative Assembly of Alberta. There are 87 districts fixed in law in Alberta. History The original twenty five districts were drawn up by Liberal Member of Parliament Frank Oliver prior to the first general election of 1905. The original boundaries were widely regarded as being gerrymandered to favour the Alberta Liberal Party, although the Liberal Party did receive the majority of votes in the 1905 election and thus rightly formed majority government. Every boundary redistribution since 1905 has been based on the original boundaries, with districts being split or merged. From 1905 to 1926 with only a few exceptions each district elected a single member on the First Past the Post system. 1957 Alberta Liquor Plebiscite
The 1957 Alberta liquor plebiscite was a province-wide plebiscite conducted in Alberta, Canada The plebiscite asked voters if they were in favour of adding extra ALCB outlets in their district. It was held on October 30, 1957. At the time, the Alberta Liquor Control Board operated only a few stores from which liquor could be legally purchased. A vote among egg producers was also held on the question of an egg marketing board. An additional vote was held regarding mixed drinking in the major cities, also on October 30, 1957. The 1957 votes were not held in conjunction with an Alberta election. Background The province of Alberta decided to hold a plebiscite after divisive debate in the legislature on the need to deal with demands to loosen regulatory restrictions to liquor that had been in place since the Prohibition era. Hugh Horner
Hugh Macarthur Horner (February 1, 1925 – March 27, 1997) was a physician and surgeon. He served as a Canadian federal and provincial politician. Horner was born in Blaine Lake, Saskatchewan. He was a Minister of the Crown in the province of Alberta and worked on agricultural projects after leaving politics. Federal politics Horner first ran for a seat in the House of Commons of Canada in the 1958 federal election. He defeated incumbent Member of Parliament Charles Yuill to win his first term in office. Horner would run again in the 1962 federal election, and defeated Yuill once again to earn his second term in office. William Patterson (December 11, 1908 – February 13, 1996) was a provincial politician from Alberta, Canada. He served as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta from 1959 to 1967 sitting with the Social Credit caucus in government. Social Credit
Social credit is a distributive philosophy of political economy developed by C. H. Douglas. Douglas attributed economic downturns to discrepancies between the cost of goods and the compensation of the workers who made them. To combat what he saw as a chronic deficiency of purchasing power in the economy, Douglas prescribed government intervention in the form of the issuance of debt free money directly to consumers or producers (if they sold their product below cost to consumers) in order to combat such discrepancy. In defence of his ideas, Douglas wrote that "Systems were made for men, and not men for systems, and the interest of man which is self-development, is above all systems, whether theological, political or economic."
