Labron Harris Jr.
Labron E. Harris Jr. (born September 27, 1941) is an American professional golfer who played on the PGA Tour in the 1960s and 1970s. Harris was born in Stillwater, Oklahoma, and grew up playing the Oklahoma State University practice facility, Lakeside Golf Course. He attended Oklahoma State University, where he was a distinguished member of the golf team: second-team All-American in 1961, first-team All-American and winner of the U.S. Amateur in 1962. Harris won the 1983 Oklahoma Open and was low amateur at the 1963 Masters. He played on the winning Walker Cup, Eisenhower Trophy and Americas Cup teams. Harris turned professional in 1964; he was runner-up in voting for Rookie of the Year. Harris won the 1964 Par 3 Tournament preceding the Masters. His father, Labron Harris, Sr. was the Oklahoma State Cowboys golf coach from 1947 to 1973. Stillwater, Oklahoma
Stillwater ( iow, Ñápinⁿje, ''meaning: "Water quiet"'') is a city in, and the county seat of, Payne County, Oklahoma, United States. It is located in north-central Oklahoma at the intersection of U.S. Route 177 and State Highway 51. 1971 PGA Tour
The 1971 PGA Tour season was from January 7 to December 12. The season consisted of 44 official money events. Lee Trevino won the most tournaments, six, and there were 10 first-time winners. Trevino won two majors, the U.S. Open and The Open Championship, in a span of three weeks. In between, he also won the Canadian Open to become the first to win all three in the same season. On his last hole, Hill threw a ball out of a sand trap. Hill was disqualified but it was for his signing a scorecard with an incorrect score on it. Americas Cup (golf)
The Americas Cup was a biennial men's team golf tournament between teams of amateurs golfers from the United States, Canada and Mexico. It was held nine times between 1952 and 1967. The United States won all the matches except in 1965 when Canada won the cup. The matches followed on from an informal match that had been played in 1951 at Saucon Valley Country Club between teams from the United States and Canada. A trophy was donated by Jerome P. Bowes, Jr. The event was held in even-numbered years from 1952 to 1960 when there was no Walker Cup match. However from 1961 to 1967 it was held in odd-numbered years, to avoid clashing with the Eisenhower Trophy which started in 1958 and was held in even-numbered years. The venue cycled between the United States, Canada and Mexico. Until 1967 teams consisted of seven players, six of whom played in each session. 1962 Eisenhower Trophy
The 1962 Eisenhower Trophy took place 10 to 13 October on the Fuji Golf Course at the Kawana Resort in Itō, Shizuoka, Japan. It was the third World Amateur Team Championship for the Eisenhower Trophy. The tournament was a 72-hole stroke play team event with 23 four-man teams. The best three scores for each round counted towards the team total. United States retained the Eisenhower Trophy, finishing 8 strokes ahead of the silver medalists, Canada. Great Britain and Ireland finished 12 strokes behind Canada and took the bronze medal for the third successive time while New Zealand finished fourth. Eisenhower Trophy
The Eisenhower Trophy (World Men's Amateur Team Championships) is the biennial World Amateur Team Championship for men organized by the International Golf Federation. Since the tournament was first played in 1958, it is named after Dwight D. Eisenhower, the President of the United States at the time, who was a keen amateur golfer. The equivalent competition for women is the Espirito Santo Trophy. Results The 1958 championship resulted in a tie. There was an 18-hole playoff which Australia won with a score of 222 to the United States 224. From 1958 to 2000 the teams had four players with the best three scores counting for each round. From 2002 the teams have been three players with two counting. The 2004, 2010 and 2012 championships were reduced to 54 holes because of bad weather. 1963 Walker Cup
The 1963 Walker Cup, the 19th Walker Cup Match, was played on 24 and 25 May 1963, at Turnberry, Ayrshire, Scotland. The event was won by the United States 12 to 8 with 4 matches halved. This was the first Walker Cup in which 18-hole matches were played. Great Britain and Ireland took a 6 to 3 lead on the first day after Billy Joe Patton was the only singles winner for the United States. However, the United States won all four foursomes matches on the second morning and five of the singles in the afternoon. Format The format for play on Friday and Saturday was the same. There were four matches of foursomes in the morning and eight singles matches in the afternoon. In all, 24 matches were played. Walker Cup
The Walker Cup is a golf trophy contested in odd-numbered years by leading male amateur golfers in two teams: United States, and Great Britain and Ireland. The official name is the Walker Cup Match (not "Matches" as in Ryder Cup Matches). It is organised by The R&A and the United States Golf Association (USGA). In 1921 the Royal Liverpool Golf Club hosted an unofficial contest which was followed by official annual contests from 1922 through 1924. From 1925 they became biennial, held on even-number years. After World War II they switched to odd-numbered years. They are held alternately in the U.S., and Ireland or Britain. The cup is named after George Herbert Walker who was president of the USGA in 1920 when the match was initiated. Walker is the grandfather and namesake of George H. W.
