Laanecoorie, Victoria
Laanecoorie is a locality situated on the Loddon River in Victoria, Australia. It has a community hall, church, and caravan park. Before the town was established the land was part of a station known as Languycoorie, but the name had various spellings including Lannie-e-coora and others which were used in the newspapers and Government Gazettes of the 1850's when referring to the station. Laanecoorie is situated on land once part of the huge Simson station Charlotte Plains which was taken up in 1840 by Donald Campbell Simson (1809-1851), a Scot from Islay in Scotland's Inner Hebrides. The town is named after one of three subdivisions of the station which were created in 1851 after Simson's death. In June, 1840, Simson entered a partnership with William Hampden Dutton, an agricultural scientist and pastoralist and James Monckton Darlot, an overlander and explorer. Electoral District Of Ripon
Ripon is a single member electoral district of the Victorian Legislative Assembly. It is a rural electorate based in western Victoria. In 1946 the electoral district of Ripon was first contested but then abolished in the 1955 election after being held by Labor for seven of these years. Ripon was re-created in 1976, essentially as a replacement for Hampden and Kara Kara. Ripon has an area of 16,761 square kilometres. Waanyarra, Victoria
Waanyarra is a locality in north central Victoria, Australia. The locality is in the Shire of Loddon, north west of the state capital, Melbourne Melbourne ( ; Boonwurrung/Woiwurrung: ''Narrm'' or ''Naarm'') is the capital and most populous city of the Australian state of Victoria, and the second-most populous city in both Australia and Oceania. John Monash
General Sir John Monash, (; 27 June 1865 – 8 October 1931) was an Australian civil engineer and military commander of the First World War. He commanded the 13th Infantry Brigade before the war and then, shortly after its outbreak, became commander of the 4th Brigade in Egypt, with whom he took part in the Gallipoli campaign. In July 1916 he took charge of the newly raised 3rd Division in northwestern France and in May 1918 became commander of the Australian Corps, at the time the largest corps on the Western Front. Monash is considered one of the best Allied generals of the First World War and the most famous commander in Australian history. Laanecoorie Weir
Laanecoorie Weir or Laanecoorie Reservoir, is a water storage for irrigation and domestic purposes on the Loddon River, near the towns of Laanecoorie, Victoria and Eddington, Victoria. It was constructed by contractor Andrew O'Keefe (engineer) (died 1904) in conjunction with Joshua Thomas Noble Anderson. This was the second irrigation scheme for Victoria after the Goulburn Weir. Construction commenced in 1889 and took three years to complete. The largest outlet valves in Victoria, manufactured by the United Iron Work of Abraham Roberts, were installed at the weir in 1891. The great flood of 1909 breached the weir, sending 18.3 million cubic metres of water through the opening and causing severe damage to all towns downstream. The first bridge at Laanecoorie over the Loddon River was built in 1870, but was destroyed in the flood of 1909, along with the weir. Loddon River
The Loddon River, an inland river of the northcentral catchment, part of the Murray-Darling basin, is located in the lower Riverina bioregion and Central Highlands and Loddon Mallee regions of the Australian state of Victoria. The headwaters of the Loddon River rise on the northern slopes of the Great Dividing Range east of Daylesford and descend to flow north into the Little Murray River, near Swan Hill. The river is impounded by the Cairn Curran (147,000 ML) and Laanecoorie (12,000 ML) reservoirs. The Tullaroop Creek tributary which joins just above Laanecoorie Reservoir, is impounded by the Tullaroop Reservoir (72,950ML). Dunolly is a town in Victoria, Australia, located on the Dunolly - Maryborough Road, in the Shire of Central Goldfields. At the 2016 census, Dunolly had a population of 893, down from 969 in 2006. History The town began during the Victorian Gold Rush. It is located on the traditional lands of the Dja Dja Wurrung people, who called the area ''Lea Kuribur''. One of the first accounts of the Dunolly Gold Rush was recorded by the Bendigo Advertiser on 3 July 1857 that estimated the population at 12,000. Confirmation of a rush followed on 10 July. The exact date that Dunolly was founded is unknown. The location of the township itself moved four times before the 1856 rush, further adding to the confusion of its early history. Eddington, Victoria
Eddington is a small town on the Loddon River in Central Victoria, Australia. It is approximately north-west of Maldon, SE of Dunolly, ENE of Maryborough and south-west of Bendigo. It is approximately north-west from Melbourne. There is a bridge over the Loddon at Eddington, built during 1928-30 to replace a 19th-century example that tended to be swept away by seasonal floods. One of Eddington's claims to fame is that the rescue team that set out to look for the ill-fated Burke and Wills party in the 19th century camped there overnight. While there were facilities including a brewery, cheese factory, butter factory, several hotels, race course and Churches during the second half of the 19th century, Eddington's population would be 96 today .
