''The Queen of Sparta'' (Italian:''La regina di Sparta'') is a 1931 film directed by Manfred Noa and starring Antonio Moray, Viola LaRosa and Franco Faris. The film was made by the low-budget Itala Film in Hollywood, Los Angeles, Hollywood, primarily for release in Italian American, Italian-speaking inhabitants of the United States. Shot as a silent film, silent with sound film, sound added later, it re-used footage from Noa's 1924 film ''Helena (1924 film), Helen of Troy''.Michelakis & Wyke p.162 Its complex background has led to it being classified variously as an American, German or Italian film. Manfred Noa
Manfred Noa (22 March 1893 – 5 December 1930) was a German film director. Noa was described by Vilma Bánky, who he directed twice, as her "favourite director". Noa's 1924 film ''Helena (1924 film), Helena'' has been called his "masterpiece" although it was so expensive that it seriously damaged the finances of Bavaria Film.Schildgen p.42 Noa is perhaps best known today for his 1922 film ''Nathan the Wise (film), Nathan the Wise'', an adaptation of Gotthold Ephraim Lessing's 1779 Nathan the Wise, play of the same title, which made a plea for religious tolerance. He was the third husband of the actress Eva May, who was the daughter of his fellow director Joe May. Noa died 5 December 1930 in Berlin of peritonitis.
