La Salle is an Unincorporated area, unincorporated community in Jackson County, Texas, Jackson County, Texas, United States. According to the Handbook of Texas, the community had an estimated population of 103 in 2000. Geography La Salle is located at (28.7916577, -96.6691449). It is situated along Farm to Market Road 616, FM 616 in southwestern Jackson County, approximately 16 miles south of Edna, Texas, Edna and 22 miles east of Victoria, Texas, Victoria. History In 1875, J.M. Bennett and brothers Sol and Ike West founded a cattle ranch at the site. The Missouri Pacific Railroad passed through the property in 1909. The three associates named the station Benwest, after the surnames of the owners. The name was changed to Bennview when the West brothers withdrew from the partnership in 1922. A town site was surveyed in 1924 and Bennett promoted a land sale that attracted a number of Polish people, Poles and Czech people, Czechs to the community. A post office was established at Ben ... Cotulla, Texas
Cotulla ( ) is a city in and the county seat of La Salle County, Texas, United States. Its population was 3,718 as of the 2020 census. History Immigrant Joseph Cotulla, who was reared in Silesia, then a part of Prussia, migrated to the United States in the 1850s. He joined the Union Army in Brownsville, Texas. He lived in Atascosa County, but arrived in La Salle County in 1868 to establish what became a large ranching operation. After learning that the International-Great Northern Railroad intended to lay tracks in La Salle County, he worked to establish the town that bears his name. In 1881, Cotulla donated 120 acres of his land to the railroad, and in 1882, a depot was constructed there. In 1883, the town was granted a post office. The same year, Cotulla became the county seat by special election. La Salle County, Texas
La Salle County is a county in Texas. As of the 2020 census, its population was 6,664. Its county seat is Cotulla. The county was created in 1858 and later organized in 1880. It is named for René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle, a 17th-century French explorer. History Early history The area of present-day La Salle County was occupied by the Coahuiltecan Indians until the 18th century, when they were squeezed out by the Spanish from the south and the Apache from the north. After the Mexican War of Independence, the Mexican government used land grants to encourage settlement, but very few settled in the area. By 1836, the area was entirely populated by Indians. Between the Texas Revolution and the Mexican War, the area of present-day La Salle County lay in the disputed area between the Rio Grande and the Nueces River.
