La Pastèque
La Pastèque is a French Canadian publisher of comics, based in Montréal, Québec. Overview La Pastèque ("The Watermelon" in English) was founded by Martin Brault and Frédéric Gauthier in Montréal, Québec in July 1998, and their first publication, the first volume of ''Spoutnik'', appeared that December. The establishment publisher arose from talks between Brault and Gauthier about the state of comics in Québec around 1997. Things seemed pessimistic, and it seemed unlikely that the small market in the province could sustain itself. The two wanted to invigorate comics publishing in Québec, and chose to adopt a different approach to that of Franco-Belgian or American comics by publishing artists who had more personal work. They are the main French-language publisher of a number of artists such as Michel Rabagliati, and have also revived older albums, such as Jean-Paul Eid's ''Jérôme Bigras'' and Réal Godbout & Pierre Fournier's ''Red Ketchup''. Réal Godbout
Réal Godbout is a Quebec writer and comic book illustrator, best known for his ''Michel Risque'' and ''Red Ketchup'' series which he co-created with his long-time friend Pierre Fournier. Biography In the 70's, Godbout published his comic strips in periodicals such as ''BD'' and ''L’Illustré'', and in the daily ''Le Jour''. He joined the magazine ''Croc'' with its first issue where he co-created, co-wrote and illustrated the ''Michel Risque'' and ''Red Ketchup'' series. Both series have been reprinted by La Pastèque of Montreal. More recently, his work has contributed educational strips to the young readers’ magazine ''Les Débrouillards'', and he made headlines with his award-winning adaptation of Kafka’s novel ''Amerika''. The Joe Shuster Canadian Comic Book Creator Awards (or Joe Shuster Awards) are given out annually for outstanding achievements in the creation of comic books, graphic novels, webcomics, and comics retailers and publishers by Canadian comics, Canadians. ''Red Ketchup'' is a Quebec comic book series featuring FBI's crazed rogue agent, Steve "Red" Ketchup. In 2023, Red Ketchup is the centerpiece of an animated series directed by Martin Villeneuve and produced by Sphere Animation. The character Steve "Red" Ketchup — an albino empowered by chemical means — is a former police officer, now FBI agent. Ruthless and violent, a combatant skilled in both armed and unarmed fighting techniques, he appears to be invulnerable, apparently through a combination of being incredibly fit, having a high pain threshold, and drug overdose. Pierre Fournier (comics)
Pierre Fournier (8 December 1949 – 12 November 2022) was a Canadian comic book writer, artist, editor, promoter and publisher. He was best known for his ''Michel Risque'' and ''Red Ketchup'' series which he co-created with his long-time friend Réal Godbout. Biography Fournier's satirical superhero comic, ''Les Aventures du Capitaine Kébec'', debuted in 1973 and was important to the "Springtime of Comics" movement that saw a new generation of artists creating comic books in Québec. Fournier was involved as a writer/artist, editor, art director, publisher and a passionate promoter. In 1974, he organized Québecomics, the first exhibition of its kind, shown in New York, Eastern Canada and Europe.
