La Favorita (film)
''La Favorita'' ( it, La favorita, link=no) is a 1952 Italian anthology film directed by Cesare Barlacchi. It was from the opera of the same name by Gaetano Donizetti. The film was made when Sophia Loren was being credited professionally as ''Sofia Lazzaro'' and she plays the part of Leonora. Fernando is the son of Baldassarre and has become fond of Leonora. Plot Baldassarre's daughter has married the king of Castile, Alfonso XI, who took Leonora as his favourite. When Alfonso wins a battle against the Arabs, he offers Fernando a reward, and Fernando asks to marry Leonora. The king orders their marriage, after which Fernand learns of Leonara's past and, feeling dishonoured, retreats to the monastery. Leonora visits Fernando who is moved by her entreatments and is willing to accept her, but Leonora dies from exhaustion. Paolo Silveri
Paolo Silveri (b. Ofena, 28 December 1913 – d. Rome, 3 July 2001) was an Italian baritone, particularly associated with the Italian repertory, one of the finest Verdi baritones of his time. Biography Silveri studied first in Capestrano (L'Aquila) then in Milano with Perugini, and later in Rome with Riccardo Stracciari and the bass Giulio Cirino (father of Silveri's wife Delia), making his debut there as Hans Schwartz, a bass role, in ''Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg'' in 1939. After further studies, he made new debut as a baritone in 1944, as Germont in Rome. Thereafter, he rapidly sang throughout Italy, notably at the San Carlo in Naples, and La Scala in Milan, debut as de Luna in 1949. Eleanor De Guzmán
Leonor (Eleanor) de Guzmán y Ponce de León (1310–1351) was a Castilian noblewoman. After roughly 1330, she became the long-term mistress and favourite of Alfonso XI, with whom she had the illegitimate Henry "the Fratricidal", future first monarch of the House of Trastámara. She held the lordship of Medina-Sidonia until she fell from grace in the wake of Alfonso's death in 1350. She was thus ensuingly executed by her enemies. Life Eleanor was the daughter of nobleman Pedro Núñez de Guzmán and his wife, Beatriz Ponce de León, a great-granddaughter of King Alfonso IX of León. A favourite (British English) or favorite (American English) was the intimate companion of a ruler or other important person. In post-classical and early-modern Europe, among other times and places, the term was used of individuals delegated significant political power by a ruler. Alfonso XI (13 August 131126 March 1350), called the Avenger (''el Justiciero''), was King of Castile and León. He was the son of Ferdinand IV of Castile and his wife Constance of Portugal.
