La Esmeralda, Uruguay
La Esmeralda is a beach town and seaside locality in Uruguay, Rocha Department. History The story of the area began with afforestation of sand dunes in 1949. Then, in the 1970s, the owners of the afforested areas, seeing its potential in tourist business, divided the land in ''solares'' (undeveloped plots) intended for the construction of summer homes. Although this is still an unspoilt resort, in recent years there has been a gradual but steady increase in tourist business development. In last years, the construction of a casino and five-star hotel is planned. Geography The town is located on the southeast side of Route 9, about northeast of the capital Montevideo, northeast of the resort city of Punta del Este, and southwest of Chuy. La Esmeralda is situated in La Angostura, isthmus of only 3000 meters wide, between the Laguna Negra and the South Atlantic Ocean on Rocha Department Wetlands, area declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 1976. ''La Esmeralda'' is a ballet in three acts and five scenes, inspired by the 1831 novel '' Notre-Dame de Paris'' by Victor Hugo, originally choreographed by Jules Perrot to music by Cesare Pugni, with sets by William Grieve and costumes by Mme. Copère. It was first presented by the Ballet of her Majesty's Theatre, London on 9 March 1844, with Carlotta Grisi as Esmeralda, Jules Perrot as Gringoire, Arthur Saint-Leon as Phoebus, Adelaide Frassi as Fleur de Lys, and Antoine Louis Coulon as Quasimodo. La Esmeralda (opera)
''La Esmeralda'' is a grand opera in four acts composed by Louise Bertin. The libretto was written by Victor Hugo, who had adapted it from his 1831 novel ''Notre-Dame de Paris'' (''The Hunchback of Notre Dame''). The opera premiered at the Théâtre de l'Académie Royale de Musique in Paris on 14 November 1836 with Cornélie Falcon in the title role. Despite the lavish production, the premiere was a failure, and ''La Esmeralda'' proved to be the last opera composed by Bertin, although she lived for another 40 years. Background Partially paralyzed from birth, and basically chair-bound, Louise Bertin had been somewhat of a child prodigy. She painted, wrote poetry, and when she was only 19 composed her first opera, ''Guy Mannering'' for which she also wrote the libretto based on Sir Walter Scott's novel, '' Guy Mannering or The Astrologer''. Two of her later operas were produced at the Opéra-Comique, ''Le loup-garou'' (''The Werewolf'') in 1827 and ''Fausto'' in 1831 (again with ...

Escuela Nacional De Pintura, Escultura Y Grabado "La Esmeralda"
La Esmeralda or Escuela Nacional de Pintura, Escultura y Grabado (ENPEG) (English: National School of Painting, Sculpture and Printmaking) is a Mexican art school founded in 1927 and located in Mexico City. History The history of the ENPEG started with the foundation of a sculpture and wood carving school in the former La Merced Cloister (Exconvento de la Merced) in the historic center of Mexico City by Guillermo Ruiz in 1927. In the 1930s, the school moved to the alley Callejón de la Esmeralda (now Calle San Fernando), Colonia Guerrero, which gave it the name "La Esmeralda". In 1943, Antonio M. Ruiz became head of the seemingly provisory school. He redesigned the building, separated the training in classes, and developed the first curriculum, which achieved certification by the Secretaría de Educación Pública in 1943 accompanied by the official status of an art school.
