La Danza
"La danza" (Dance) (1835) is a patter song by Gioachino Rossini, in Tarantella napoletana time, the eighth song of the collection ''Les soirées musicales'' (1830–1835). The lyrics are by Count Carlo Pepoli (:it:Carlo Pepoli, it), librettist of Vincenzo Bellini's opera ''I puritani''. "La danza" is a stand-alone chamber music, chamber vocal piece, rather than part of a larger work. Franz Liszt transcribed it for piano; Frédéric Chopin used the song as inspiration for his Tarantelle (Chopin), Tarantelle in A-flat, Op. 43; and Ottorino Respighi featured it in ''La Boutique fantasque''. ''La Boutique fantasque'', also known as ''The Magic Toyshop'' or ''The Fantastic Toyshop'', is a ballet in one act conceived by Léonide Massine, who devised the choreography for a libretto written with the artist André Derain, a pioneer of Fauvism. Derain also designed the décor and costumes for the ballet. Ottorino Respighi wrote the music based on piano pieces by Gioachino Rossini. Its world premiere was at the Alhambra Theatre in London on 5 June 1919, performed by Sergei Diaghilev's Ballets Russes. Massine described how, in Rome for a ballet season, Respighi brought the score of Rossini's '' Péchés de vieillesse'' to Diaghilev. The impresario played them to Massine and Respighi. Tarantelle (Chopin)
The ''Tarantelle in A-flat major'', Op. 43 is a short piano piece in tarantella form, written by Frédéric Chopin in June 1841 and published in October 1841. It takes about 3 minutes to play. It is a moto perpetuo marked Presto, and requires an advanced technique. It was inspired by Gioachino Rossini's song ''La Danza'', also written in the tarantella's characteristic 6/8 rhythm. Chopin went to some lengths to ensure the time signature was the same as Rossini's, and enlisted his friend Julian Fontana to check the best editions of Rossini's work for this detail. The manuscript shows Chopin changed his time signature from 12/8 to 6/8. There is no evidence the work was commissioned, nor was it dedicated to anyone. Gioachino Rossini
Gioachino Antonio Rossini (29 February 1792 – 13 November 1868) was an Italian composer who gained fame for his 39 operas, although he also wrote many songs, some chamber music and piano pieces, and some sacred music. He set new standards for both comic and serious opera before retiring from large-scale composition while still in his thirties, at the height of his popularity. Born in Pesaro to parents who were both musicians (his father a trumpeter, his mother a singer), Rossini began to compose by the age of 12 and was educated at music school in Bologna. His first opera was performed in Venice in 1810 when he was 18 years old. In 1815 he was engaged to write operas and manage theatres in Naples.
