''La Danse: The Paris Opera Ballet'' (french: La danse - Le ballet de l'Opéra de Paris) is a 2009 French documentary film directed by Frederick Wiseman. Besides aiming to reveal "how the company functions as an organic whole", the film follows the production of seven ballets by the Paris Opera Ballet. The ballets featured are: * ''Genus'' (Wayne McGregor) * ''La maison de Bernarda'' (Mats Ek) * ''Le songe de Médée'' (Angelin Preljocaj) * ''Paquita'' (Pierre Lacotte, after Joseph Mazilier and Marius Petipa) * ''Orpheus und Eurydike'' (Pina Bausch) * ''Roméo et Juliette'' ( Berlioz) (Sasha Waltz) * ''The Nutcracker'' (Rudolf Nureyev version) The film proceeds without commentary, and there are no voiceovers. He has been called "one of the most important and original filmmakers working today". Life and career Wiseman was born to a Jewish family in Boston, Massachusetts, the son of Gertrude Leah (née Kotzen) and Jacob Leo Wiseman. He earned a Bachelor of Arts from Williams College in 1951, and a Bachelor of Laws from Yale Law School in 1954. Émilie Cozette
Émilie Cozette (born 1981) is a French ballet dancer. She joined the Paris Opera Ballet in 1998, becoming a star (étoile) in 2007. Early life Born in 1981, Cozette started to dance in Pont de l'Arche, Normandy, when she was just six years old. Although she was also interested in the piano, she opted to concentrate on ballet at the Conservatoire de Rouen, continuing at the Paris Opera Ballet School where she graduated in 1998. Myriam Ould-Braham (born January 1982) is a French ballet dancer. After joining the Paris Opera Ballet in 1999, she became a ''première danseuse'' (principal) in 2005 and was elevated to the rank of ''étoile'' (star) in 2012. Early life Born in Paris, Ould-Braham's father is Algerian, her mother French. Taking an early interest in gymnastics in Algiers, she later turned to dance, finding it was more fun to move about with music. Isabelle Ciaravola (born March 12, 1972) is a French ballet dancer. From 1990, she danced with the Paris Opera Ballet where she rose to the top rank of étoile in 2009. Since retiring from the stage in February 2014, she has devoted most of her time to teaching. Laetitia Pujol (born 8 October 1975) is a French ballet dancer. She joined the Paris Opera Ballet in 1993, becoming a principal in 2000 and a star (étoile) in 2002. Early life Born in Toulouse, she started to dance ballet when she was eight but was not admitted to the Conservatoire régional de Toulouse until 1992. Clairemarie Osta (born 1970) is a French ballet dancer who performed with the Paris Opera Ballet as an ''étoile''. In 2017, she became the head of the ballet department at the Royal Swedish Ballet School. Early life Osta was born in Nice, and started ballet at age 5. José Carlos Martínez (dancer)
José Carlos Martínez (born in 29 April 1969 in Cartagena) is a Spanish dancer and choreographer. He was a ''danseur étoile'' of the Paris Opera Ballet and artistic director of the Spanish National Dance Company. He became the director of dance at Paris Opera Ballet in December 2022. Agnès Letestu (born 1 February 1971) is a French prima ballerina. Biography She decided to start ballet when she saw her first ballet on TV (''Swan Lake''). Then she had the opportunity to start ballet as a hobby, and her teacher, Mr. Bertin, persuaded her to audition for the ''Opéra Ballet School'' which she joined when she was 10. Manuel Legris is a French ballet dancer, born in Paris on October 10, 1964. He was an ''étoile'' (star dancer) of the Paris Opera Ballet for 23 years. Marie-Agnès Gillot (born in 1975) is a French ballet dancer and choreographer. She danced with the Paris Opera Ballet as an ''étoiles''. She is also POB's first in-house female dancer to choreograph for the company. Early life Gillot was born in Caen, to an accountant and a physical therapist.
