''The Book of Dust – La Belle Sauvage'' is a play by Bryony Lavery based on the 2017 fantasy novel of the same name by Philip Pullman which is the first part of ''The Book of Dust ''The Book of Dust'' is a trilogy of fantasy novels by Philip Pullman, which expands his trilogy ''His Dark Materials''. The books further chronicle the adventures of Lyra Belacqua and her battle against the theocratic organisation known as the ...'' trilogy (set twelve years before Pullman's '' His Dark Materials''). Production The play made its world premiere at the Bridge Theatre, London on 30 November 2021 (with a press night on 14 December) running until 26 February 2022. The play was originally scheduled to open in the summer of 2020, however was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The play will also be broadcast live to cinemas as part of NT Live on 17 February 2022. Sir Philip Nicholas Outram Pullman (born 19 October 1946) is an English writer. His books include the fantasy trilogy ''His Dark Materials'' and ''The Good Man Jesus and the Scoundrel Christ'', a fictionalised biography of Jesus. In 2008, ''The Times'' named Pullman one of the "50 greatest British writers since 1945". In a 2004 BBC poll, he was named the eleventh most influential person in British culture. NT Live
National Theatre Live is an initiative operated by the Royal National Theatre in London, which broadcasts live via satellite, performances of their productions (and from other theatres) to cinemas and arts centres around the world. About I grew up in Manchester in the 60s. If I had been able to see Olivier's National Theatre at my local cinema, I would have gone all of the time. :— Nicholas Hytner, director of the Royal National Theatre. The programme began its pilot season in June 2009 with a production of '' Phèdre'', starring Helen Mirren, which screened live in 70 cinemas across the UK. Two hundred more venues eventually showed the production internationally, resulting in a combined audience of around 50,000 people for this one performance. Bryony Lavery (born 1947) is a British dramatist, known for her successful and award-winning 1998 play '' Frozen''. In addition to her work in theatre, she has also written for television and radio. She has written books including the biography ''Tallulah Bankhead'' and ''The Woman Writer's Handbook'', and taught playwriting at Birmingham University. Biography Lavery grew up in Dewsbury. Having begun her career as an actress, she decided that she was fed up with playing poor parts in plays, such as the left arm of a sofa, and decided to write plays with better parts for women. ''La Belle Sauvage'' is a fantasy novel by Philip Pullman published in 2017. It is the first volume of a planned trilogy titled ''The Book of Dust'' and is set twelve years before Pullman's ''His Dark Materials''. It presents events prior to the arrival of the six-month-old Lyra Belacqua at Jordan College, Oxford. Setting The setting is a world dominated by the Magisterium (commonly called "the Church"), an international theocracy which actively suppresses heresy. In this world, humans' souls naturally exist outside of their bodies in the form of sentient " dæmons" in animal form which accompany, aid, and comfort their humans. An important plot device is the alethiometer, or symbol reader, of which just six are known to exist in this world.
