Antonia Mercé y Luque (September 4, 1890 – July 18, 1936), largely known by her stage name, La Argentina, was an Argentine-born Spanish dancer known for her creation of the Neoclassicism, neoclassical style of Spanish Dances, Spanish dance. Considered one of the most famous Spanish dancers of the 20th century, she was known as the "Queen of the Castanets" and the "Flamenco Pavlova." She was one of the major influences on Japanese people, Japanese butoh dancer, Kazuo Ohno. La Argentina (poem)
''La Argentina'' is a 1602 poem written by Martín del Barco Centenera. The full name is ''Argentina y conquista del Río de la Plata, con otros acaecimientos de los reinos del Perú, Tucumán y estado del Brasil'' ( es, Argentina and conquest of the Río de la Plata, with other events from the kingdoms of Peru, Tucuman and the state of Brazil). Martín del Barco Centenera was a priest who arrived to the Río de la Plata Basin along with the ''adelantado'' Juan Ortiz de Zárate. He wandered through the region for twenty-four years, narrating a poem with his experiences. The poem mixes both real events and imaginative tales, such as human-shaped fishes. The work, with more than ten thousand verses divided in twenty-four canticles, was published in Lisbon in 1602. Hippolyte Bouchard
Hippolyte or Hipólito Bouchard (15 January 1780 – 4 January 1837) was a French-born Argentine sailor and corsair who fought for Argentina, Chile, and Peru. During his first campaign as an Argentine corsair he attacked the Spanish colonies of Chile and Peru, under the command of the Irish-Argentine Admiral William Brown. During his overseas voyage he blockaded the port of Manila. In Hawaii, he recovered an Argentine privateer which had been seized by mutineers. He also met the local ruler, King Kamehameha I. His forces occupied Monterey, California, then a Spanish colony, raised the Argentine flag and held the town for six days. After raiding Monterey, he plundered Mission San Juan Capistrano in Southern California. Toward the end of the voyage Bouchard raided Spanish ports in Central America. ARA ''La Argentina'' was a light cruiser, designed for training naval cadets, built for the Argentine Navy. The ship was authorised in 1934, and the contract was put out to tender in 1935, being won by the British company Vickers-Armstrongs at a cost of 6 million pesos. ''La Argentina'' was built in Barrow-in-Furness, England. She was laid down on 11 January 1936, launched 16 March 1937 and not completed until 31 January 1939, being delayed by the British re-armament programme. She was decommissioned in 1972 and scrapped. Design The design was based on British practice, being modified to meet the requirements of the Argentinians for a training ship with 60 cadets. ARA ''La Argentina'' (pennant number D-11) is the second ship of the MEKO 360, MEKO 360H2 series of four destroyers built for the Argentine Navy. The ship is the eighth ship in the history of the Argentine Navy to bear the name of the corsair frigate ''La Argentina'' which conducted a privateer raid around the world against Spanish trade in 1817.
