La Algaba
La Algaba is a Spanish municipality in the province of Seville, Andalusia, with a population of around 16,000. It belongs to the region of La Vega, 7 km from the provincial capital, Seville. The town dates back to the Byzantine Empire, and has many historical artifacts and significant churches. The river Guadalquivir features prominently in the history of La Algaba. The river acquires a considerable width here, with large poplars leaning over the water, and is surrounded by numerous orange orchards. Fishing on its banks is a common activity among locals. The town is also known for its many festivals. History The earliest mention of a settlement in this vicinity comes from the early Byzantine Empire (sixth century CE), mentioning that the descendants of the earlier Tartessian civilization had founded the village of Balbilis at this location. A bullring is an arena where bullfighting is performed. Bullrings are often associated with the Iberian Peninsula, but they can also be found through Iberian America and in a few Spanish and Portuguese ex-colonies in Africa. Bullrings are often historic and culturally significant centres that bear many structural similarities to the Roman amphitheatre. Juan Martínez Montañés (March 16, 1568 – June 18, 1649), known as el Dios de la Madera (''the God of Wood''), was a Spanish sculptor, born at Alcalá la Real, in the province of Jaén. He was one of the most important figures of the Sevillian school of sculpture. Biography Juan Martínez Montañés was born on March 16, 1568 in Alcalá la Real, Jaén, Spain. His master was Pablo de Roxas. His first known work, dating to 1597, is the graceful St. Christopher in the church of El Salvador at Seville. His ''Boy Christ'' (dated 1607) is in the sacristy of the cathedral of Seville. His masterpiece, the great altar of St Jerome at San Isidoro del Campo, Santiponce, near Seville, was contracted in 1609 and completed in 1613. Montañés executed most of his sculpture in wood, which was gessoed, polychromed and gilded. Mudéjar art, also known as Mudéjar style, refers to a type of ornamentation and decoration used in the Iberian Peninsula, Iberian Christian kingdoms, primarily between the 13th and 16th centuries. It was applied to Romanesque architecture, Romanesque, Gothic art, Gothic, and Renaissance architectural styles as constructive, ornamental, and decorative motifs derived from those that had been brought to or developed in Al-Andalus.
