The London and North Western Railway (LNWR) Class C1 was a class of 0-8-0 steam locomotives. 34 were rebuilt by Charles Bowen Cooke from Class A 3-cylinder compounds between 1909 and 1912. Photographic Grey
Photographic grey, also known as works grey, was a paint scheme commonly applied to steam locomotives during the period before colour photography became commonplace. It was applied to allow sharper, more detailed images of the locomotive to be recorded. The first photographs of railways and their locomotives were made by private individuals, but by the 1860s the railway companies themselves were keen to create official photographs of the highest quality possible of their latest designs, which led to the adoption of photographic grey in railway photography. Use Railway companies wished to record their latest locomotives for use in publicity material and advertisements, and as a technical record of their work. Charles Bowen Cooke
Charles John Bowen Cooke (11 January 1859 – 18 October 1920) was born in Orton Longueville (then in Huntingdonshire) and was Chief Mechanical Engineer (CME) of the London and North Western Railway (LNWR). He was the first to add superheating to the locomotives of the railway. He wrote a book called ''British locomotives: their history, construction; and modern development'' which was published in 1893, with a second edition in 1894, and third in 1899 A second book, ''Developments in Locomotive Practice'' followed in 1902. Whilst CME of the LNWR he was responsible for the introduction of several new locomotive designs, including the ''George the Fifth'' and ''Claughton'' classes. He was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in the 1918 New Year Honours for his efforts during the First World War. Crewe Works
Crewe Works is a British railway engineering facility located in the town of Crewe, Cheshire. The works, which was originally opened by the Grand Junction Railway in 1840, employed around 7,000 to 8,000 workers at its peak. In the 1980s, a lot of the engineering works were closed. Much of the site has been redeveloped but the remaining parts are owned and operated by French-owned multinational rolling stock manufacturer, Alstom SA. During the late 19th century, the London and North Western Railway used Crewe Works to produce many famous locomotives such as the Webb Jumbo class and the compounds, the Whale Experiment and Precursor classes, and the Bowen-Cooke Claughtons. LNWR Class A
The London and North Western Railway (LNWR) Class A was a class of 0-8-0 steam locomotives. From 1893 to 1900, Crewe Works built 111 of these engines, which had a three-cylinder compound locomotive, compound arrangement, and were designed by Francis Webb (engineer), Francis Webb. According to the LNWR Society, 110 were built between 1894 and 1900. Rebuilding Like the other Webb compounds, they proved problematic, so in 1904 George Whale began rebuilding these to simple expansion steam engine, simple expansion engines. Under the Whyte notation for the classification of steam locomotives, represents the wheel arrangement of no leading wheels, eight powered and coupled driving wheels on four axles and no trailing wheels. Locomotives of this type are also referred to as eight coupled. Overview Examples of the 0-8-0 wheel arrangement were constructed both as tender and tank locomotives. The earliest locomotives were built for mainline haulage, particularly for freight, but the configuration was later also often used for large switcher (shunter) types. The wheel arrangement provided a powerful layout with all engine weight as adhesive weight, which maximised the tractive effort and factor of adhesion. Francis Webb (engineer)
Francis William Webb (21 May 1836 – 4 June 1906) was an English railway engineer, responsible for the design and manufacture of locomotives for the London and North Western Railway (LNWR). Webb was born in Tixall Rectory, near Stafford, the second son of William Webb, Rector of Tixall. Career Crewe Works Showing early interest in mechanical engineering, on 11 August 1851 at the age of fifteen he was articled as a pupil of Francis Trevithick at Crewe Works.Griffiths, p.51 Webb joined the drawing office in 1856, at the end of his training. The London and North Western Railway (LNWR) Class D was a class of 0-8-0 steam locomotives. They were simple engine rebuilds of earlier Webb Class A three-cylinder compound engines. History Though the original rebuilds of the Class As had reused the existing small (4 ft 3 in diameter) boilers with 19.5 in diameter cylinders ( Class C, the smaller boilers could not raise adequate steam, so from 1906 the next 62 rebuilds (63 according to the LNWR Society) were rebuilt with a larger 5 ft 2 in diameter Experiment-type boilers, retaining the cylinders.
