The London and North Eastern Railway (LNER) D41 class was a type of 4-4-0 steam locomotive inherited from the Great North of Scotland Railway (GNSR). The class consisted of two similar GNSR classes: 'S' (introduced in 1893 and designed by James Johnson (railway engineer), James Johnson) and 'T' (introduced in 1895 and designed by William Pickersgill). The two classes were similar but with detail differences to the boiler. James Johnson (railway Engineer)
James Johnson was an English railway engineer, and was Locomotive Superintendent of the Great North of Scotland Railway (GNSR) from 1890-1894. He was the son of Samuel Waite Johnson, of Midland Railway fame. Locomotive designs At the GNSR, he designed the locomotive classes listed below. William Pickersgill
William Pickersgill (1861 – 2 May 1928) was an English railway engineer, and was chief mechanical engineer of the Caledonian Railway from 1914 until Grouping in 1923. He was appointed locomotive superintendent of the Northern Division of the London, Midland and Scottish Railway but retired in 1925. He died in Bournemouth. Career Great Eastern Railway Pickersgill was born in Nantwich, Cheshire. He started work on the Great Eastern Railway at Stratford in 1876, where he was a Whitworth Exhibitioner, and after several posts in the running department he was appointed district locomotive superintendent in Norwich in 1891. Neilson And Company
Neilson and Company was a locomotive manufacturer in Glasgow, Scotland. The company was started in 1836 at McAlpine Street by Walter Neilson and James Mitchell to manufacture marine and stationary engines. In 1837 the firm moved to Hyde Park Street and was known as Kerr, Mitchell and Neilson and, in 1840, Kerr, Neilson and Company, becoming Neilson and Mitchell in 1843. Locomotive building began in 1843 for the local railways. In 1855 production of marine and stationary engines discontinued and the company changed its name again to Neilson and Company. Among those who later became notable in the field were Henry Dübs and Patrick Stirling.
