LLR 81mm
The ''Mortier de 81mm léger long renforcé'' (LLR 81 mm) is a mortar used by the French Army, manufactured by Thales Group, Thales. Introduced in 1997, it is the latest iteration of the TDA 81 mm light mortar family. Description The original TDA 81 mm was designed in 1961 (hence the MO-81-61 designation). Since then, three variants have been fielded: * the 81mm LC or MO-81-61-C (''Léger court'', "light short"), with a 1.15-metre barrel; * the 81mm LL or MO-81-61-L (''Léger long'', "light long"), with a 1.55-metre barrel; * the 81mm LLR (''Léger long renforcé'', "light long reinforced"), paratrooper version with a 1.55-metre barrel. Mortar (weapon)
A mortar is usually a simple, lightweight, man-portable, muzzle-loaded weapon, consisting of a smooth-bore (although some models use a rifled barrel) metal tube fixed to a base plate (to spread out the recoil) with a lightweight bipod mount and a sight. They launch explosive shells (technically called bombs) in high-arcing ballistic trajectories. Mortars are typically used as indirect fire weapons for close fire support with a variety of ammunition. History Mortars have been used for hundreds of years. The earliest mortars were used in Korea in a 1413 naval battle when Korean gunsmiths developed the ''wan'gu'' (gourd-shaped mortar) (완구, 碗口). The Battle of Kolwezi was an airborne operation by French and Belgian airborne forces that took place in May 1978 in Zaire during the Shaba II invasion of Zaire by the Front for the National Liberation of the Congo (FLNC). It aimed at rescuing European and Zairean hostages held by FLNC rebels after they conquered the city of Kolwezi. The operation succeeded with the liberation of the hostages and light military casualties. Mortier 120mm Rayé Tracté Modèle F1
The MO-120 RT (factory designator) or MO-120-RT is a French heavy mortar. The RT in the designator stands for ''rayé, tracté'', which means rifled, towed. The MO-120-RT is currently used by the French Army (where it is known as RT F1 or Mortier de 120mm Rayé Tracté Modèle F1—"120 mm rifled towed mortar, model F1"), and has also been exported to more than 24 foreign countries or in some cases, produced under licence. It is issued to artillery units, where it complements artillery guns and systems; although infantry units operate it in some countries. A vehicle-mounted and automated mortar system derived from the MO-120 RT, known as the 2R2M is in service with a number of nations.
