Transporte Aéreo S.A. d/b/a LATAM Express (previously known as LAN Express) is a subsidiary of LATAM Chile based in Santiago, Chile. It operates few domestic flights for its parent. Its main hub is Arturo Merino Benítez International Airport. History The airline was established as Ladeco by Juan Costabal Echeñique on November 1, 1958, flying mostly internal routes between Chile's major cities. Initially, the company mainly flew domestic services, but later served international routes to the Caribbean and North America. In 1993, Ladeco was sold 37.35% to Iberia, which in turn approved the sale to LAN-Chile. In 1994, LAN-Chile bought over 99.41% of the shares and merged Ladeco into its fleet. Desierto De Atacama Airport
Desierto de Atacama Airport is an airport serving the region around Copiapó, the capital of the Atacama Region of Chile. The airport is in the desert north of the Copiapó River, inland from the Pacific coast. Opened in February 2005, the airport replaced the smaller Chamonate Airport near the city, which was unable to increase its capacity and could not handle larger narrow-body planes such as the Airbus A320 and Boeing 737-800. Copiapó
Copiapó () is a city and commune in northern Chile, located about 65 kilometers east of the coastal town of Caldera. Founded on December 8, 1744, it is the capital of Copiapó Province and Atacama Region. Copiapó lies about 800 km north of Santiago by the Copiapó River, in the valley of the same name. In the early 21st century, the river has dried up in response to climate change and more severe droughts. The town is surrounded by the Atacama Desert and receives 12 mm (½ in) of rain per year. The population of Copiapó was 9,128 in 1903; and 11,617 in 1907. As of 2012, there are 158,438 inhabitants. Copiapó is in a rich silver and copper mining district. Carriel Sur International Airport is located in Talcahuano, Greater Concepción in the Bío Bío Region, 8 km (5 mi) from Concepción downtown. Calama, Chile
Calama is a city and commune in the Atacama Desert in northern Chile. It is the capital of El Loa Province, part of the Antofagasta Region. Calama is one of the driest cities in the world with average annual precipitation of just . The River Loa, Chile's longest, flows through the city. Calama has a population of 147,886 (2012 census). The commune also encompasses the Quechua communities of Estación San Pedro, Toconce and Cupo; and the Lickan-antay communities of Taira, Conchi Viejo, Lasana, San Francisco de Chiu Chiu, Aiquina-Turi, and Caspana. Balmaceda Airport
Balmaceda Airport is an airport next to the village of Balmaceda, serving the Aysén Region of Chile. The airport is west of the Argentina border, it is located 55 km south-east of Coyhaique, the regional capital. The Balmaceda VOR-DME (Ident: BAL) is located off the approach threshold of Runway 09. Balmaceda is a Chilean village ( es, aldea) located south east of Coyhaique in Aysén Region.
