Léon De Sorel
Léon de Sorel, marquis de Sorel (1655 – 4 November 1743) was a French naval officer and colonial administrator who was governor of Saint-Domingue in 1719–1723. Family Léon marquis de Sorel (1655-1743) was from a family from the Bailiwick of Noyon. His parents were Charles, seigneur de Villiers and Jeanne du Montel. He was grandson of Robert de Sorel and Antoinette des Essarts, and great-grandson of Florent de Sorel. On 23 March 1699 in Rennes he married Marie Louise Marguerite de Marnière. They had a boy, Charles Gilles Léon (2 January 1701 – 24 May 1767). In 1708 he married Catherine Allain, widow of Cosme de Séran. His daughter Marie-Catherine married in 1729 to Jacques-Etienne-Louis Texier, Comte d'Hauteville, an army captain. Career Léon marquis de Sorel, became a captain of the Navarre Infantry. Amédée-François Frézier
Amédée-François Frézier (1682 – October 26, 1773) was a French military engineer, mathematician, spy, and explorer who is best remembered for bringing back five specimens of ''Fragaria chiloensis'', the beach strawberry, from an assignment in South America, thus introducing this New World fruit to the Old. Family history As described by G.M. Darrow, Frézier's ancient surname was derived from ''fraise'', the French word for strawberry. A story relates the surname is derived from the fact that Julius de Berry, a citizen of Anvers (i.e. Antwerp), was knighted by Charles the Simple in 916 for a timely gift of ripe strawberries. The Emperor gave the Fraise family (the surname was corrupted as "Frazer") three "fraises" or stalked strawberries for their coat of arms. Order Of Saint Louis
The Royal and Military Order of Saint Louis (french: Ordre Royal et Militaire de Saint-Louis) is a dynastic order of chivalry founded 5 April 1693 by King Louis XIV, named after Saint Louis (King Louis IX of France). It was intended as a reward for exceptional officers, notable as the first decoration that could be granted to non-nobles. By the authorities of the French Republic, it is considered a predecessor of the Legion of Honour, with which it shares the red ribbon (though the Legion of Honour is awarded to military personnel and civilians alike). Although officially abolished by the government authorities of the July Revolution in 1830 following the French Revolution, its activities carried on as a dynastic order of the formerly sovereign royal family. Étienne Cochard De Chastenoye
Étienne Cochard de Chastenoye (died c. 1749) was a French colonial soldier who was interim governor of Saint-Domingue (Haiti) three times in the 18th century. Early career Étienne Cochard de Chastenoye came to Saint-Domingue in 1697, and served without interruption until 1749. He was a major in Léogâne in 1713 and in Le Cap (Cap-Haïtien) in 1714. He was the king's lieutenant in Le Cap in 1717. In 1720 he was made a knight of the Order of Saint Louis. In 1723 Chastenoye succeeded Jean-Pierre de Charitte as governor of Saint Croix and Le Cap. Chastenoye and his son were both governors of La Cap and lieutenants to the governor general of Saint-Domingue, and both lived in Le Cap. His son was Achille de Cochard de Chastenoye, Marquis de Chastenoye. Joseph Joubert Charles La Bastide, knight and marquis of Chateaumorand (or Château-Morand), was a naval officer and colonial administrator French in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
