Lymphocyte Expansion Molecule
Lymphocyte expansion molecule (LEXM) is a protein discovered in 2015, found to be involved in immune responses (in mice) to some cancers and viruses. The protein was initially found to be responsible for an increased production of T cells in mice. The original paper has since been retracted upon recommendation of Imperial College's investigators due to concerns about duplication of data. The protein may be relevant to humans and could be a target for drug discovery. An immune response is a reaction which occurs within an organism for the purpose of defending against foreign invaders. These invaders include a wide variety of different microorganisms including viruses, bacteria, parasites, and fungi which could cause serious problems to the health of the host organism if not cleared from the body. There are two distinct aspects of the immune response, the innate and the adaptive, which work together to protect against pathogens. T Cells
A T cell is a type of lymphocyte. T cells are one of the important white blood cells of the immune system and play a central role in the adaptive immune response. T cells can be distinguished from other lymphocytes by the presence of a T-cell receptor (TCR) on their cell surface. T cells are born from hematopoietic stem cells, found in the bone marrow. Developing T cells then migrate to the thymus gland to develop (or mature). T cells derive their name from the thymus. In academic publishing, a retraction is the action by which a published paper in an academic journal is removed from the journal. Procedure A retraction may be initiated by the editors of a journal, or by the author(s) of the papers (or their institution). Drug Discovery
In the fields of medicine, biotechnology and pharmacology, drug discovery is the process by which new candidate medications are discovered.
