Luis Fortuño Janeiro
Luis Fortuño Janeiro (1902 – 1966) was a politician, historian, journalist, and businessman from Ponce, Puerto Rico. He was senator from Ponce from 1937 to 1941. Historian and journalist Fortuño is best remembered for his ''Album Histórico de Ponce (1692–1963)'', a photographic record of the city of Ponce and its leaders that covered nearly 300 years of Ponce history. It was his second edition of the book. He owned Imprenta Fortuño (Fortuño Press), a 20th-century icon in southern Puerto Rico's publishing industry. The press shut down in 2015. Political career In 1936, he led the strike against the high rates of the Ponce Electric Company. The Company was subsequently sold to the Puerto Rican Government's Autoridad de Fuentes Fluviales (now (2019) called "Autoridad de Energía Eléctrica de Puerto Rico"), becoming part of it in 1937. Puerto Rico Senatorial District V, also known as the Senatorial District of Ponce, is one of the eight senatorial districts of Puerto Rico. It is currently represented by Marially González Huertas and Ramón Ruiz Nieves (both from the Popular Democratic Party). District profile The Senatorial District V has an approximate population of 464,962. Carnaval Ponceño
The Carnaval de Ponce (English: Ponce Carnival), officially Carnaval Ponceño, is an annual celebration held in Ponce, Puerto Rico. The celebration lasts one week and it ends on the day before Ash Wednesday. Thus, it is generally held in February and sometimes in March. It is one of the oldest carnivals of the Western Hemisphere, dating back to 1858. Some authorities, such as the Smithsonian Institution, believe the Ponce Carnaval can be traced to as far back as 250 years ago. The Carnaval coincides with the Mardi Gras of New Orleans, the Carnival of Venice, and Rio de Janeiro's Carnival. The estimated attendance is 100,000. Parque del Tricentenario is a passive urban park in the city of Ponce, Puerto Rico. The park was built to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the founding of the city. It was inaugurated during the mayoral administration of mayor Rafael Cordero Santiago. Location The park is a passive urban family park. It is located in Barrio Tercero (Ponce), Tercero at the entrance to the Ponce Historic Zone on Miguel Pou Boulevard, at the southern terminus of Puerto Rico Highway 1, PR-1. Features The park is a three-plaza park. All three plazas have gardens and marble benches. Setting the stage for the park is ''El Puente de los Leones'' (The Bridge of the Lions).
