The La Plagne bobsleigh, luge, and skeleton track is a bobsleigh, luge, and skeleton (sport), skeleton track located in La Plagne, France. The track was the venue for the bobsleigh and luge competitions for the 1992 Winter Olympics whose host city was neighboring Albertville. History In 1986, Albertville was awarded the 1992 Winter Olympics over Sofia, Bulgaria; Falun, Sweden; Lillehammer, Norway; Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy; Anchorage, Alaska, United States; and Berchtesgaden, West Germany. Wendel Suckow
Wendel Suckow (born April 11, 1967 in Marquette, Michigan) is an American luger who competed during the 1990s. He is best known for the being the first American to ever win a gold medal in luge either at the Winter Olympics or the World Championships when he was the surprise winner of the 1993 championships in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Suckow along with fellow Boy Scout and future Olympic medalist Chris Thorpe, first experienced luge on a small hometown track that (later relocated to nearby Negaunee, Michigan) remains the only full-length natural track luge facility in the United States. Competing in three Winter Olympics, Suckow's best finish was fifth in the men's singles at Lillehammer in 1994. Robert Pipkins
Robert Pipkins (born February 23, 1973) is an American former luger. He competed at the 1992 Winter Olympics and the 1994 Winter Olympics. He was the first African-American to represent the United States in the luge at an international level. Biography Pipkins was born in Buffalo, New York in 1973, and attended Drexel University in Philadelphia. He took up luge in 1987, after his mother read about the sport and encouraged him to take part in the sport. In 1992, Pipkins became the first American luger to win an international race, when he finished first at the World Junior Championships. He was on the US Luge Team from 1991 to 1998, winning four back-to-back titles during that time. At the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville, Pipkins competed in the men's singles event, finishing in 21st place.
