Viscount Falkland is a title in the Peerage of Scotland. Referring to the royal burgh of Falkland in Fife, it was created in 1620, by King James VI, for Sir Henry Cary, who was born in Hertfordshire and had no previous connection to Scotland. He was made Lord Cary at the same time, also in the Peerage of Scotland. His son, the second Viscount, was a prominent statesman. The latter's younger son, the fourth Viscount (who succeeded his elder brother), notably served as Lord Lieutenant of Oxfordshire. His son, the fifth Viscount, represented several constituencies in the House of Commons and held office as First Lord of the Admiralty from 1693 to 1694. The Falkland Islands in the south Atlantic are named after him. Lucius Cary, 2nd Viscount Falkland PC (c. 1610 – 20 September 1643) was an English author and politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1640 to 1642. He fought on the Royalist side in the English Civil War and was killed in action at the First Battle of Newbury. Early life Cary was born at Burford in either 1609 or 1610 as the son of Sir Henry Cary, afterwards first Viscount Falkland, and his wife Elizabeth, whose father Sir Lawrence Tanfield was at that time Lord Chief Baron of the Exchequer. Henry Cary, a member of an ancient Devon family, was lord deputy of Ireland from 1622 to 1629. He was made Viscount Falkland and Lord Cary in 1620. Lucius Henry Cary, 6th Viscount Falkland (27 August 1687 – 31 December 1730) was a Scottish peer and Jacobite. Cary was the son of Edward Cary (1656–1692), of Caldicot, Monmouthshire, and his wife Anne, the eldest daughter of Charles Lucas, 2nd Baron Lucas. In 1694, he succeeded as Viscount Falkland upon the death of his third cousin once removed, Anthony Cary, 5th Viscount Falkland. Early in life, his guardian sued on his behalf to obtain the estate of Stanwell, Middlesex. Upon the death of Falkland's first cousin once removed, John Cary, in 1686, he had left that estate in trust to his great-niece, Elizabeth Willoughby, provided that she would marry Lord Guilford within three years of his death; the inheritance was otherwise to go to the 5th Viscount and his heirs, then to Edward Cary and his heirs. Lucius Charles Cary, 7th Viscount Falkland (c. 1707 – 27 February 1785) was a Scottish peer. Cary was the son of Lucius Cary, 6th Viscount Falkland and his first wife, Dorothy. He succeeded to the peerage in 1730 when his father, a loyal Jacobite (and an earl in the Jacobite peerage) died in Paris. On 6 April 1734, Falkland married Jane, Viscountess Villiers (d. Lucius Bentinck Cary, 10th Viscount Falkland GCH, PC (5 November 1803 – 12 March 1884), styled Master of Falkland until 1809, was a British colonial administrator and Liberal politician. Background Falkland was the son of Charles John Cary, 9th Viscount Falkland, and his wife, Christiana. He succeeded as tenth Viscount Falkland in 1809 at the age of five after his father was killed in a duel. He was educated at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst and on 21 April 1821, purchased an ensigncy in the 22nd Regiment of Foot. He exchanged from the half-pay of that regiment to the 63rd Regiment of Foot on 13 December 1821, and then to the 71st Regiment of Foot on 20 December 1821. Falkland purchased a lieutenancy in the 7th Regiment of Foot on 6 January 1825, and a captaincy on 9 December 1826. He retired from the Army in November 1830. Lucius Plantagenet Cary, 13th Viscount Falkland (23 September 1880 – 24 July 1961), styled Master of Falkland from 1886 to 1922, was a Scottish peer. The eldest son of Byron Cary, 12th Viscount Falkland and his wife Mary, Cary was educated at Eton College and the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. He was commissioned into the Grenadier Guards on 6 December 1899, and served as a second lieutenant in the 2nd Battalion during the Second Boer War. He was promoted lieutenant by augmentation on 1 April 1903. Cary was seconded to the 3rd King's African Rifles and stationed in Nairobi from 1903 to 1905.
