Loyola–Towson Lacrosse Rivalry
The Loyola–Towson lacrosse rivalry is an intercollegiate lacrosse rivalry between Baltimore's Loyola Greyhounds of the Patriot League and Towson Tigers of the Colonial Athletic Association. The teams first met in 1959 and competed at the NCAA Division II level until transferring up to Division I in 1980 for Towson and in 1982 for Loyola. The two programs share locations on Charles Street and are separated by only four and a half miles. They also share cross-street rivalries with foe Johns Hopkins (see Johns Hopkins–Loyola lacrosse rivalry). Successful in Division II, both the Greyhounds and Tigers have had success at the national level in the first division since moving up. Loyola has appeared in four Final Fours and won the 2012 national title, while Towson has appeared in three final fours of their own, in addition to their 1974 Division II championship. Loyola Greyhounds Men's Lacrosse
The Loyola Greyhounds men's lacrosse team represents Loyola University Maryland in NCAA Division I lacrosse. Its home matches are played at the Ridley Athletic Complex. Charley Toomey has served as its head coach since 2006. It became a member of the Patriot League along with the university's other intercollegiate athletic programs on July 1, 2013. The Greyhounds were a member of the ECAC Lacrosse League from 2005 to 2013. It became the first member of the conference to win a national championship in 2012. It was also the first national title in the university's Division I history. Dave Cottle
Dave Cottle is a retired American lacrosse coach. He was a consultant for Marquette University, when they added men's and women's varsity lacrosse on December 16, 2010. He was previously the head coach for the Maryland Terrapins men's lacrosse team at the University of Maryland from 2002 to 2010. Cottle also coached the Loyola College men's lacrosse team from 1983 to 2001. College career Cottle attended Northern High School in his hometown of Baltimore, Maryland. He later enrolled at Salisbury State University in Salisbury, Maryland, where he played lacrosse from 1975 to 1978. During his playing career, he set numerous school and NCAA records. Towson () is an unincorporated community and a census-designated place in Baltimore County, Maryland, United States. The population was 55,197 as of the 2010 census. Tewaaraton Award
The Tewaaraton Award is an annual award for the most outstanding American college lacrosse men's and women's players, since 2001. It is the lacrosse equivalent of football's Heisman Trophy. The award is presented by The Tewaaraton Foundation and the University Club of Washington, D.C. Lacrosse is the oldest sport played in North America and the award honors the Native American heritage of lacrosse in the name of its award, "Tewaaraton," the Mohawk name for their game and the progenitor of present-day lacrosse. The Tewaaraton Award has received the endorsement of the Mohawk Nation Council of Elders. 2017 NCAA Division I Men's Lacrosse Championship
The 2017 NCAA Division I Men's Lacrosse Championship was played on Memorial Day weekend in May 2017 at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts. This was the 47th annual single-elimination tournament to determine the national championship for National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I men's college lacrosse. Seventeen teams competed in the tournament, based upon their performance during the regular season. For nine teams entry into the tournament was by means of a conference tournament automatic qualifier, eight teams received at-large selections. Maryland won their 3rd NCAA title, defeating Ohio State 9-6. This was Maryland's first national title since 1975. 2016 NCAA Division I Men's Lacrosse Championship
The 2016 NCAA Division I Men's Lacrosse Championship was the 46th annual single-elimination tournament to determine the national championship for National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I men's college lacrosse. Eighteen teams competed in the tournament, chosen by either winning an automatic qualifying conference tournament or as an at-large bid based on their performance during the regular season. The participating teams were announced on May 8. North Carolina won the title, defeating Maryland 14–13 in overtime in the final, becoming the first unseeded team to win the championship. Shawn Nadelen
Shawn Nadelen (born April 16, 1979) is a retired professional lacrosse player and the current head men's lacrosse coach at Towson University. He attended Johns Hopkins University where he made two NCAA Tournament Final Four appearances with the Blue Jays as a long stick midfielder. MLL career Nadelen was selected by the Bayhawks as the 15th overall pick in the 2001 MLL Collegiate Draft. He has played his entire field lacrosse career with Bayhawks organization. Nadelen helped win two Major League Lacrosse Championships: 2002 and 2005. He was named to the 2006 MLL All-Star Team. Nadelen retired in June 2011 after being named the head men's lacrosse coach at Towson University. Charley Toomey
Charley Toomey is an American lacrosse coach. He is currently the head coach for the Loyola Greyhounds men's lacrosse team at Loyola University Maryland. Playing career He played for Loyola as a goalkeeper and helped bring them to the school's first NCAA final in 1990. He also played professionally for both the Baltimore Thunder and the original Boston Blazers, although he only played in three games during the two years he played. Coaching career As head coach of the Loyola Greyhounds, he led the team to win the NCAA D1 lacrosse championship on May 28, 2012, completing the year with an 18 and 1 record. The team's one loss was to Johns Hopkins. Toomey was named the 2012 winner of the F. Morris Touchstone Award as the Division I Coach of the Year. 2001 NCAA Division I Men's Lacrosse Championship
The 2001 NCAA Men's Lacrosse Championship game was played at Rutgers Stadium in front of 21,268 fans. A Princeton goal with 41 seconds remaining in the first overtime period lifted second-seeded Tigers (14-1) to a 10-9 victory against top-seeded Syracuse (13-3). With the victory, Princeton earned its sixth national championship (1992, 1994, 1996, 1997, 1998) in ten years. This marked the fourth time that the Tigers had won the title game in overtime. The 1996 NCAA Division I men's lacrosse tournament was the 26th annual Division I NCAA Men's Lacrosse Championship tournament. Twelve NCAA Division I college men's lacrosse teams met after having played their way through a regular season, and for some, a conference tournament. The championship game was played at Maryland's Byrd Stadium in front of 22,102 fans. The game saw Princeton defeat Virginia by the score of 13–12 in overtime.
