Low Profile (New Zealand Band)
Low Profile were a New Zealand alternative rock band of the 1980s, formed by Phil Bowering (formerly of The Protons) and Steve Garden (Last Man Down, National Anthem), recording on the Jayrem label. The band's lineup included – among others – the late Mike Farrell on guitar and vocals, Tom Ludvigson (the Jive Bombers, Snap, Bluespeak, Trip to the Moon) and Stuart Pearce ( Coconut Rough). Low Profile released two albums – ''Quiet Streets'' (1982) and ''Elephunkin (1987), but are best remembered for their quirky single ''Elephunk in My Soup''(mixed in Feb. 1984, released in 1984) with its unlikely instrumentation of hosepipe A garden hose, hosepipe, or simply hose is a flexible tube used to convey water. Alternative Rock
Alternative rock, or alt-rock, is a category of rock music that emerged from the independent music underground of the 1970s and became widely popular in the 1990s. Jayrem
Jayrem Records is a New Zealand record company founded by James ('Jim') Moss in 1975 under the name Record and Cassette Distribution. Moss changed the name to Jayrem Records in 1981 and released the first singles on that label in 1982. Moss stated at the time: "Musicians should write and play music, not waste time and talent running around trying to promote and sell. their records ... that's where people like myself can help out". Moss owned the Chelsea Records chain of record shops during the 1980s and was able to identify niche markets that weren't being catered for by other labels. Initially concentrating on alternative rock and indie music, the Wellington-based company was, for many years, the main rival to South Island based Flying Nun Records, and produced records which had a similar sound to its southern compatriot, though concentrating less on the Dunedin-sound groups which formed a major part of Flying Nun's repertoire. Coconut Rough
Coconut Rough were a short-lived New Zealand pop/ new wave band formed in 1982. Despite their 1983 first single, "Sierra Leone", hitting the top five, and the band being named ''Most Promising Group of the Year'' at that year's RIANZ Awards they split up in 1984. History The band was formed in 1982 by lead singer Andrew Snoid, formerly with New Zealand bands the Whizz Kids, Pop Mechanix and Australian-based New Zealand group the Swingers, and guitarist Mark Bell. Bell later joined Snoid in a reformed Pop Mechanix. Other member were bassist Dennis "Choc" Te Whare, keyboardist Stuart Pearce and drummer Paul Hewitt, and later bassist Bones Hillman. They decided on the name "Coconut Rough" based on a type of sweet treat popular in Australia and New Zealand. The band's biggest hit was also their first single. Tube Trumpet
Homemade tube trumpets are natural trumpets constructed out of a length of hose pipe fitted with a kitchen funnel. They are used as teaching aids, and by bands such as the Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band and Low Profile. Construction As with the natural trumpet and bugle, the tube trumpet is a simple (valveless) brass instrument, and is therefore in principle limited to a single harmonic sequence, though by employing embouchure it can be made to produce a chromatic scale in the higher registers. It can be constructed in any desired key depending on the length of tubing used; and a working tube trumpet can be retuned to a sharper pitch by trimming the hose. Once shortened it cannot be returned to its original or a flatter pitch.
