Love Is Hell (Kitchens Of Distinction Album)
''Love Is Hell'' is the debut album by British alternative rock band Kitchens of Distinction, first released in April 1989 by One Little Indian Records in the UK and A&M Records in the US. While the album earned KOD comparisons to bands like Echo & the Bunnymen and The Chameleons, the guitar soundscapes created by Julian Swales and the passionate lyrics and vocal delivery from Patrick Fitzgerald gave Kitchens of Distinction their own signature sound. The album also maintains a punkier sound than to be featured on the band's later albums. The 1993 CD edition of the album includes the band's 1989 ''Elephantine'' EP as 4 bonus tracks. The album takes its title from the last line in "Hammer", a song about love gone wrong. Kitchens Of Distinction
Kitchens of Distinction (sometimes shortened colloquially to KOD) are an English three-person alternative rock band formed in Tooting, South London, in 1986. They released four studio albums and a handful of singles and EPs before disbanding in 1996. In September 2012, Patrick Fitzgerald announced on the Facebook page of Stephen Hero that he and the other original KOD members Julian Swales and Dan Goodwin were working on new material as Kitchens of Distinction. The reunited trio released their fifth studio album, their first since 1994, in late September 2013. Barry Sage
Barry Sage is a British sound engineer and producer, currently living in Santiago, Chile. Sage has worked with a variety of British and Latin American acts, including the Rolling Stones, Boy George, Pet Shop Boys, Nicole and Charly García. Career Sage began his career as a tea boy at Trident Studios in London, later going on to be a tape operator assisting Elton John and Queen, among others. Rolling Stones Initially as the assistant to Chris Kimsey, Sage worked with the Rolling Stones twice, in 1978 (on ''Some Girls'') and 1981 (''Tattoo You''). The Chameleons
The Chameleons are an English rock band, formed in Middleton, Greater Manchester in 1981. The band's classic line-up consisted of lead vocalist and bassist Mark Burgess, guitarists Reg Smithies and Dave Fielding, and drummer John Lever. The band released their debut studio album, '' Script of the Bridge'', in 1983. They followed it with '' What Does Anything Mean? Basically'' and '' Strange Times'' in 1985 and 1986, respectively, before abruptly breaking-up in 1987 due to the sudden death of the band's manager. After the break-up, Burgess and Lever formed the Sun and the Moon, while Fielding and Smithies formed the Reegs. Burgess also had a short solo career with backing band the Sons of God. Berry Street Studio was a recording studio in Clerkenwell, Central London. Established in 1970, Berry Street is built along traditional lines, having a large live area, incorporating acoustically live and dead zones, together with isolation booths, and a control room. During its history, Berry Street has been used by musicians such as Elton John, Billy Bragg, Michael Nyman, Radiohead, Freddie Mercury, Barry White, Paul Young, Devilish Presley, Pigbag, The Slits, and others. ''Strange Free World'' is the second album by British alternative rock band Kitchens of Distinction, released on 19 February 1991 in the US by A&M Records and on 18 March 1991 in the UK by One Little Indian Records. It is the follow-up to their 1989 debut '' Love Is Hell''. Noted producer Hugh Jones, who worked with Echo & the Bunnymen (on their 1981 album ''Heaven Up Here''), among many others, helped KOD to sound more at ease in the studio. Reviewer Ned Raggett of AllMusic notes that "Musically, the tunes sound quite ambitious in many ways, often steering away from conventional verse-chorus-verse formulas," and calling the album an overall excellent effort. It is often considered one of the group's best works, as well as possibly its most popular and commercially successful, peaking at number 45 on the UK Albums Chart.
